More About the Author

Penelope King is the author of several bestselling young adult fantasy-romance novels, including the "Spellbound Trilogy" and the "Demonblood Series."

In addition to her love for reading and writing, she enjoys listening to music and hitting the beach, being a gym rat and doing yoga, or just kicking back and watching a trashy reality show. She can BBQ better than most men, and if she had to marry a food it would probably be pizza, but she'd cheat on it with sushi.

Penelope resides in Charlotte, North Carolina

Witchy, Witchy
By Penelope King

Calista is not your ordinary teenage girl; she has always been blessed with special gifts, like opening her curtains with the flick of her finger. Though she had no idea just how special she was until her and her father move to Crystal Cove Estates in Southern California, there she finds out that she was actually born a witch, and the lady of the house who has hired her father to be her new caretaker is actually none other than her own grandmother, Ana. Not only does Calista have to start a new school and deal with the local bully she must also be on guard against a group of people who had been cursed with an insatiable need to kill witches, witch-hunters. Thus begins Calista's new life and to make matters more interesting she has been having dreams of a guy she met on the beach her first day there, making her feel like a love sick child, but there is more to these dreams than even she realizes.

So much happened in this first book I was afraid I wouldn't be able to do it justice. I loved how Penelope King explained her version of witches; it was very unique and intriguing, that when the world began normal human being could not survive so the Gods created a special group of kind hearted people who were blessed with powers of the lesser Gods. Penelope King was able to write a beautiful love story, but also a story about a young woman finding out about herself and for the first time in her life actually having friends that are as close to her as family. The only thing I wanted more of from this book was the story of her mother but I am hoping that, that story is more intertwined within the next books. I definitely can't wait to read the next book this one was left on such a cliffhanger I am almost itching to know what happens next.

I was sent a copy of this book for review.

First, this is just a few notes I'm jotting down. I will flesh out the review more later.

Innocent YA, light on the romance but heavy on the magic.

I always enjoy stories of witches, how cool would it be to have powers like that! I like some of the unique touches regarding their world, their power, and their enemies. It had a little Secret Circle kind of feel to it, a high school 'Charmed' air to it. Very light, easy YA reading.

Some of the twists and turns I was expecting- but there were more than a few that left me shocked. My mind kept trying to put pieces together, but the ultimate final ones I hadn't even found let alone figured it out.

No worries of a huge cliffhanger, but this book definitely is setting up the next in the series. There is no happily ever after for now, but it does not necessarily end unhappily either. There are many times I did question, however... why didn't this happen? Or why hadn't she shared that? Or why wasn't she taught this and that? But questions aside, I enjoyed the youthful voice of the book and let myself get swept away.

If you like light, paranormal, YA with vanilla romance and next to no 'hanky panky' then this book would be right up your alley. If you desire a little more spice, then you may want to pass on this.

"Every vital organ in my body froze instantly. He was, undoubtedly, the most remarkably handsome boy I had ever seen in my life. Any time, any place."

"Hello, abs!"

Here's the story of teen Calista moving to a new town in a new state with her dad so that they can basically start over. Living in the guest house of a mysterious, yet friendly, woman, she figures out really fast that her life is about to change drastically. The good news is that she finally figures out why she is so different from everyone else. And not just different in the sense that all girls feel while during the crazy teen years, but different as in "I'm a witch and have crazy special powers." different.

So if that's not enough, she still has to deal with starting a new school complete with mean girls, a boy who really wants to be her boyfriend, and a guy she met once on the beach but can't get out of her mind and meets in her dreams every night.

I found the story to be believable yet just enough fantasy/paranormalish that I wanted to continue reading. Penelope King kept the story moving quickly while also revealing the important details and the correct moments.

This was my first ever teen fantasy/young adult paranormal romance novel. While I was skeptical at first to read something outside of my particular norm, I found that once I got past the first few pages, I was interested. When I got to the climatic point, I was so completely hooked, I was almost disappointed in the way it ended. I wanted more and quickly looked to see in the next book was available...it's not yet. But as soon as it is released, I will be getting it!

From the onset I was drawn in with wondrous curiosity.... The n kept intrigued with the amazing storylines and fast pace with which "Author Penelope King" pens her awesome read....

Calista the main character with which this story revolves around is charming and a character that can't help but fall in love with.... Then she further amazes us the readers with the cast of characters that surround Calista to make this an epic story and beginning to the series that I feel will stand the test of time...

I encourage anyone that loves the action of a great movie with the side order of "Charmed", Witches and Warlocks and Hunters will truly absorb and love this first installment of "Author Penelope King's" (Spellbound Series)....

Charming, gritty and romantic as well.... A smorgasbord of literary brilliance and A Must Read!!! I have already started Book #2 "Kiss the Crystal Sun" of the "Spellbound Series" and I can truly say that you will not be disappointed. I know that I'm not, sonrisa....
