Book Description

December 1, 1987
In 1903 Amy Carmichael's book Things as They Are shocked many Englishmen and Americans into taking a closer look at India. Unafraid of public criticism, Amy Carmichael had revealed to the Western world the spiritual bondage of India as well as the suffering of thousands under the supposedly "benign" religion of Hinduism. She raised a plea for the little children who were being sold into lives of shame as slaves in Hindu temples.

Never content to do things man's way when the Lord was showing her a better way, Amy Carmichael was one of the first missionaries in India to adopt Indian dress. Amid Christians who considered manual labor dishonorable, she cheerfully settled down to doing her share of the work with the Dohnavur children. But the qualities of Amy Carmichael that will stand out to the reader are her daring faith, her overcoming spirit, and her tender love for the children she sought to rescue. She was their beloved "Amma," or "Mother." Her family grew to almost a thousand children before her death in 1951.

We hope that With Daring Faith will be a first step for our readers in discovering the wealth of insight and challenge that missionary biographies can offer. In Amy Carmichael's victories in India, we see the victory of the Lord Jesus Christ over the powers of darkness.

More About the Author

Like Robert Louis Stevenson, Rebecca whiled away many of her childhood days sick in bed (being absent in fifth grade more than she was present). Much of that time was spent reading--mostly adventure stories and mysteries--and writing, mostly adventure stories and mysteries that she never finished. But ultimately, biographies of great Christians influenced her the most, and Rebecca wants to encourage the next generation (and their parents) with as many of these inspiring stories as possible. Her first book, "With Daring Faith: A Biography of Amy Carmichael" won the C.S. Lewis Gold Medal for Outstanding Christian Juvenile Literature. Her new series, Hidden Heroes (including the books "With Two Hands: Stories of God at Work in Ethiopia" and "The Good News Must Go Out: Stories of God at Work in the Central African Republic) is named for the great Christians whose names are not household words. These books provides stories that she, as a member of the South Carolina Storytelling Network, loves to tell to children in churches in schools.

While she writes, Rebecca is also currently homeschooling the last of her four children. She blogs at www.heresthejoy.com.

When Amy Carmichael was a little girl, she prayed that God would change her brown eyes to blue. When He didn't, Amy's mother explained that while God always answers prayer, He sometimes says 'No'. Many years later, when she was working as a missionary in India, she was forced to diguise herself to rescue child prostitutes. It was then that she realized the value of her brown eyes and why her childhood wish had not been granted. This is just one of many instances in the life of Amy Carmichael, a woman who lived life to the fullest, because she lived it "With Daring Faith".

Childhood Relic! May 4, 2003

I read this book 15 years ago and have been in love with it ever since! Amy Carmicheal's story is one of great faith, love, and courage- a true role model for girl and women, even today. I recommend this book with the highest of praise.

In "With Daring Faith" a young reader will travel from England into India with Amy Carmicheal...a missionary that is still remembered in India today. This book recalls the struggles and miracles that founded the Christian faith in thousands of young Indian women.

I am so excited that this book can still be purchased!

This book was not "readable" enough for its target audience. It seemed like it was for an older, maybe even adult, audience. I'm unaware of another biography on Amy Carmichael for this age group (besides the series on heroes of the faith), so I was disappointed that it did not meet my expectations.
