I'll admit that my first exposure to Teo Macero was through his appearance in the Clint Eastwood-produced Thelonious Monk documentary 'Straight, No Chaser', in which Teo appeared as the avuncular and slightly goofy house producer at Columbia Records, doing a little mock-jive dance in the studio with Thelonious. So, it was my considerable surprise to encounter this record and hear Macero's highly cerebral work as a musician. A tenor sax player with a tone almost as dry as that of altoist Paul Desmond, Macero also had a highly personal and advanced sense of harmonics and structure as a writer and improviser, as well as an almost Monk-like sense of rhythm. Matched here with vibist Teddy Charles, who is always comfy playing on the line between inside and outside, and a rhythm section led by the matchless Mal Waldron, and the result is an invigorating experience. You would be hard pressed to find another album that is this laid back while, at the same time, demanding your complete attention. I'll never think of Teo again as just that jolly guy in the Monk film.

A must for people who like the classic Jazz of the late 50's and early 60's. Teddy Charles is especially good on the vibes. I had never heard of him before. Too bad the CD is only 37 minutes - this is the only bad news.

This music demands a full consentration as is required in a Concerts Hall, it can't be treated as a backround music, I recommand to follow the directions that are written inside and find the time for full listening .
