Biography

"Musically, Alejandro Escovedo is in his own genre." David Fricke, Rolling Stone

Alejandro's whole life has pretty much been documented already and reads like a "How to Make Rock and Roll A Lifelong Profession" primer. Ground Zero punk rock dude with The Nuns (they opened for the Sex Pistols last show, you know), cowpunk progenitor in Rank and File, gutter ... Read more in Amazon's Alejandro Escovedo Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Alejandro Escovedo - With These Hands (with bonus) August 10, 2004
Format:Audio CD
Alejandro Escovedo is a master at writing what might best be called the epic ballad. Conventionally we are used to `epic' songs being long affairs, with majestic lyrics talking of grand ideas complemented by overstated guitar solos and a dense sound. What is this all in the name of? Power. But as Escovedo shows in his recently re-released album With These Hands, there are more interesting ways to make powerful music.

A classic case in point is the album's emotional centre-piece, Pissed Off 2am. Normal song classification would have this number down as a ballad. As with most ballads, it has subject matter which is sad, it is slow-paced, it has sweet but not cloying harmonies, and it is full of the language of loss, drink, and lack of meaning. It touches the listener, and creates a visual image - the two protagonists are there, right in front of you, you feel like you know everything there is to know about their story, you share the singer's despair...ultimately you begin to identify with him, however silly and inappropriate this is. But this song has something else - it has a subtle but clearly present force, which drives the song in a way which sets it apart from most ballads. It is difficult to pin down exactly how Escovedo achieves this. As with all good epics, there is a piano - but it isn't ostentatious plonking in the best Meat Loaf style, it is more a series of delicate whispers, just in the right place, adding to the melody rather than disguising the lack of one. The lyrics also play their part in creating such a unique song - they are not the simple platitudes of loss, but something far more complex.

5.0 out of 5 stars Holy Alejandro! This disc ROCKS! February 25, 2004
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I already knew Alejandro could write weepers and rockers. In fact, I already owned the previous version of With These Hands, which I've nearly worn out. Intrigued by the extra tracks on this one (mostly live), I jumped on the "remaster" bandwagon. This is one FANTASTIC release, and the live tracks, extremely well-recorded, prove Al's live muscle once again. Easily the best of the Alejandro remasters, this is a must for any Alejandro junkie, and a great place to start for any interested takers. Artistry and beauty set to rock and roll. IF YOU EVER GET THE CHANCE, GO SEE AL LIVE!

4.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful play loud drink whiskey with lights low August 10, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
A varied and interesting program, although "Crooked Frame" is a better song to play when you're pissed off at 2am than "Pissed Off 2am." A songwriter who doesn't get cute for the sake of cuteness or lean heavily on the ever-growing choss pile that is alt-country-Austin cliche, Escovedo knows what he's doing. What I play when I'm driving across Wyoming.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great CD July 23, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This CD defies classification. It is quite simply one of the best CDs' released in 1996. It has a nice blend of rockers and ballads. For a disk with no hits it feels as if every song should have been a hit or received some radio play. I am not a white suburban wannabe ganster, so in an era of loud thumping beats and abraisive lyrics it was a nice surprise to find a CD that had songs I could relate to. I had never heard of Alejandro Escovedo before this disk, I thought the cover was interesting so I bought it, now I look for his music whenever I go shopping. This disk will definately appeal to adults, and with a couple of listenings could be well received by the youth market.

5.0 out of 5 stars Escovedo is amazing!!!! September 25, 2000
Format:Audio CD
This cd is very very good and showcases Alejandro's great songwriting abilities combined with "from the soul" lyrics. It defies being lumped into any one style of music; it rocks, it twangs a bit, its folksy and earthy too - but most of all it's honest. If you like this cd you MUST hear Alejandro's "Thirteen Years" cd. One of the most beautifully crafted album ever. This is a singer/songwriter that is greatly under-appreciated.
