4.0 out of 5 stars Fun for mystery readers December 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is indeed a locked-room murder mystery with a twist. There's the usual gory mess, but it couldn't have happened there. Or could it?

If you're a puzzle fan, and especially if you enjoy Golden Age mysteries, you'll have fun with this. Watch out for the red herrings! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! February 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
As all of the Jack Daniel's series books are great, this one is no exception. Great for a puzzle lover. The characters are hillarious and I can never put a Jack Daniels book down until I'm done reading it cover to cover. If you haven't read this on, be sure to add it to your list!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Twisty - a real Must-Read for... March 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
... all the friends and lovers of Jack Daniels!

Hey you, not only that liquid one!
No, also that beautiful and intelligent character created by J.A. Konrath, heroine of so fantastic thrillers like Bloody Mary - A Thriller (Jack Daniels Mysteries) and its sequels, and short stories (often even for free..) like Truck Stop - A Psycho Thriller...

This time Jack and her partner Detective First Class Herb Benedict have to solve a real closed-room mystery: Mr Edward Wyatt, 67 years, has been found in his house - locked from inside, windows closed - but it seems that he has fallen from a great height into his also locked living room. How that, you may ask?

Only by reading this very delightful mystery short-story You can follow step by step the enraveling of this secret - constructed by the great puzzle-master that the stone dead Mr Wyatt obviously had been...

Simply enjoy it - it's worth it!
Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Watch out for red herrings! July 23, 2012

I've read several of J.A. Konrath's stories in his series about Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels of the Chicago Police Department, and they're always entertaining. "With a Twist" is no exception, and combining Jack Daniels' deadpan humor with a "locked room" mystery is a definite winner. Was Edward Wyatt the victim of a homicide, or was it a suicide? Either way, how could a person have possibly fallen no more than a few feet and suffered injuries consistent with a fall of at least fifty feet?

There were tons of clues, but most of them were irrelevant. It was Daniels' job to sort out the real clues and determine what had happened. Conveniently, the dead man was trying to help her, if Daniels was smart enough to figure it out.

A very cleverly plotted short story, and a nice addition to the locked room sub-genre of detective fiction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Locked Room Mystery on the Rocks October 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I must admit that I'm a fan of the old school classic puzzle mysteries by authors like Agatha Christie in which the detective (and the reader) try to piece together the various clues to figure out whodunit. Many of them featured highly incredible plots and stock characters, but the fun was simply trying to solve the puzzle. An even more puzzling variant of these classic mysteries was the locked room story, in which not only must the detective figure out whodunit but howitgotdun as well. Few modern authors have the patience to put plots like these together, and most mysteries are more grounded in the real world. So it's always entertaining to find a modern story that's a throwback to those earlier days.

J. A. Konrath's "With a Twist" is a clever locked room mystery featuring Konrath's series hero, Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels. For those unfamiliar with the character, the story reads just as well... it's really all about the plot. Daniels is called to investigate a dead body found under very suspicious circumstances. The man is dead in his living room and appears (based on blood spatters on the floor and carpet fibers on the body) to have died from a fall from a great height, but the room is less than ten feet high. The door was locked and police had to break it down, so it appears impossible for a killer to have made an exit equally impossible for the man to have killed himself in a manner that would be consistent with the physical evidence. To make things more complicated, the deceased was a puzzle fan, and there are plenty of clues to decipher, which clues may have been left by the deceased, a killer, or both.

"With a Twist" makes no pretenses about being anything more than a puzzle in the form of a story. There are no witnesses to interview or motives to ponder.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great read! August 10, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Fun read. I have read and enjoyed all of the Jack Daniels books. I especially enjoy reading a series that has a new plot, but developing characters. My biggest problem is in the editing. I hate errors that jump off the page to me and I wish I could take a red pen to my kindle. Nothing major, but a little distracting. That said, this is a fun book with an interesting mystery and characters that are enjoyable.

A clever twist indeed! I enjoyed this howdunnit. An unusual scenario and fun, fast- paced plot. Perhaps a bit too neat and easy but I am interested to read more Jack Daniels books.
