It doesn t matter if you win or lose... until you lose. That is how Olympic Rifle Shooting Champion Lanny Bassham begins his book, With Winning in Mind, the most authoritative book available on mental training for sports and competitive business environments. The book tells the tale of a competitor who understands the feeling of losing. Bassham lost the Gold Medal and took the Silver instead after the pressure of the competition went to his head during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. In With Winning in Mind, Bassham paints a picture for readers of just why this loss was so devastating for him. Losing mattered and it hurt! But Bassham explains that he wasn t about to walk away defeated and he sets off on a journey to find out everything he can about how the mind is involved in sport and performance. What he discovered will amaze you! His discovery lead to the creation of Mental Management® Systems and brought Bassham to the Olympic victory stand just 4 years later in 1976 with his Olympic Gold Medal win in Montreal. With his discoveries, Bassham created a mental system for athletes and performers he called Mental Management®. With Winning in Mind serves as an introduction to this system, and with it you can learn the secrets to mastering pressure and the powerful mental tools used by Olympians and elite champions. This little book has helped countless number of athletes, Olympians, coaches, parents, performers, and business professionals find success in the winner s circle. Now the 3rd Edition of With Winning in Mind is available and includes new chapters, new stories and examples, and 25 percent more mind enhancing content as the last edition of the book. "Over the years there have been times where I have thought to myself, gosh, I wish I had put that in With Winning in Mind. Well now I have."Bassham said. The new version of the book is completely updated with information on decisiveness, goal setting, and the mental program. --Publishers Review

More About the Author

Lanny Bassham was born on January 2, 1947 in a small Texas town. He wasn't the best athlete in school growing up but had Olympic size dreams. His dream and his dedication to training lead him to the Olympic Games. He was capable of shooting winning scores and knew that the Gold Medal was in his reach.

In 1972, at the Munich Germany Olympic Games, Lanny Bassham failed in his attempt to win the Gold Medal in International Rifle Shooting. He had a mental failure resulting in his taking the Silver instead. He had not mentally prepared for the Olympic Pressure and chocked in the most important competition of his life. Frustrated, Lanny wanted to take a course in controlling the mind under pressure. After looking for such a seminar and not finding satisfaction, Bassham began to interview Olympic Gold Medalists to discover what they were doing differently to win.

What he discovered was truly remarkable. Bassham created a system of mental control he calls Mental Management®. Within the next six years Lanny Bassham dominated his sport, winning 22 world individual and team titles, setting 4 world records and winning the coveted Olympic Gold Medal in Montreal in 1976.

For the past 33 years, Lanny has been teaching Mental Management® to Olympians, business owners, Fortune 500 Corporations and the elite of sport and business community. I have read several books on the mental game and this one by far is the best. Lanny does an outstanding job of explaning how performance is generated. In his view performance is a function of three mental processes, the Conscious Mind, the Subconscious Mind, and the Self Image. He shows a model on the relationships of the three and provides outstanding principles that support his view.

Unlike other books that talk about one area of the mental game and try to get you to cope with yourself, this one provides explations of why people are where they are at and shows you how you can improve. I have since purchased other products (such as Freedom Flight, which is on audio and available on Amazon) from Lanny's web sight and have been very pleased with all of them.

This book is an easy read, with little filler in it and I would recommend it to everyone. I rank this in my top three books on the mental game, the other two being "The Inner Game of Tennis" by Tim Gallwey and "Fearless Golf" by Gio Valiante.

If your looking at getting an edge in the Mental Game, this book if for YOU!

I recieved this book, from a friend, as I was reaching the top of my shooting career. It IS the very best mental managment system there is. It helps me when there seems there is nothing else to improve on. With Mr. Bassham's ideas I earned 2, back to back world skeet titles and have reached the consistance in my shooting that I have always wanted. I recomend this to anyone who seriously participates in any sport, not only shooting.

There are a lot of books out there on positive thinking - books like "the secret" come to mind. Wish for a bike and you will get it! Wish for $1 million and you will get it! Why? Many books will outline some vague, metaphysical/new age reason - surely if you sit on your bed and squeeze eyes shut, cross your fingers, and mutter your wish over and over, god/some spiritual force/genie in the bottle will grant it for you...

This is not that kind of book. In a nutshell, the book basically lays out a mental system for positive reinforcement, planning and action. It is about dreaming, yes. But it is also about planning and taking immediate action. It IS about repetition, envisioning success, and "rehearsing" in your head - but in a way that is rooted in reality and practicality.

The book talks a lot about performance as well. The author is an olympic gold medalist in rifling, so a lot of this is applicable in high pressure scenarios. I actually came across this book was because I heard mental management being mentioned by a former navy seal/sniper in a documentary. But it's a very balanced kind of "performance" - it's not an iron-fist kind of discipline. It's a method that relies on positivity and focusing on strengths.

Yes - we all know positive thinking helps - we're not stupid. But I have never come across a book that laid it out in a comprehensive, no none-sense manner. It's clear, it makes sense, and it's not fluff. It's the same old principle...but with a new light shone on it and using simple methods that makes sense. The writing style is conversational, but with substance - I feel like I had a conversation with a wise grandparent (there's a lot of humor in the book too).

This is a must have for anyone not just the competive athlete but anyone wanting to improve their life. I have used the techniques in this book for competition and performance with my singing. It has helped with my home life by changing my attitude towards my kids and husband. And helped me with job interviews by helping me learn how to change my self image so it is "like me" to interview well. I recommend this book to everyone I know!

It is an easy read with not much extra filler - just a whole lot of meat to chew on.

Lanny Bassham also has an Audio CD "Freedom Flight" which is another incredible life changing tool that I recommend. As a performer I use the techniques provided and I also use the information to help aid others that I mentor to in pageantry. Great information no matter your sport or interest! Love it!

Thanks Lanny for sharing your knowledge with the world.

I have no vested interest in this book (although you'd think I did with how much I rave about it to my clients). I first encountered this book at the tail end of my time competing in archery. I bought it with little expectation and then after reading I wished I'd had it back in primary school when I first started playing sport.

I've seen sport psych from the perspective of both athlete and coach and I've found that Bassham's is very helpful for both parties. I especially love the fact that the book spares the reader from all the academic dribble that is such a feature of many sports psych books. He covers the range of key elements that are found in top personal development programs (whether they be sport or self help) but does so in a very easily digested manner.

As far as lending any cred to my comments I've been fortunate enough to be national medalist in 2 different sports, was in the national archery team and held a scholarship as an archer. I've also served as a conditioning coach to many elite athletes and recommend this book to all of them. I say this not to rave on about myself but simply to help the reader see that I'm in a position to provide quite a well informed opinion on books such as this one.

Buy it, read it, read it again and implement the program. That's really all I can say.

Best of luck,
Matt
