A Desperate Fortune
The tales of two women's lives are divided by three centuries but are remarkably similar in many other ways. See more books by Susanna Kearsley

Book Description

No matter how hard she's tried, Nicole Pierce has always picked the wrong guy. She dumps them as soon as they reveal themselves as the cheaters and abusers they are, but it's left her heartsore and discouraged. When she needs a date for a social function, from now on she's going to pick one from the gorgeous, hands-off, strictly-business escorts of Club Blue.

Her childhood best friend Sean Rollins won't stand for that. He and Nicole haven't seen each other for years, but he's the safe, long-distance shoulder she can cry on--a hard role for Sean, who loves her in secret. When he finds out about the escorts, he wants to keep her safe. Even though he knows more about martial arts than Armani, and even though he hasn't told Nicole he's now in the same city, he becomes an escort at Club Blue under an assumed name.

To his relief, Nicole chooses him. He's tall, dark, handsome...and oddly familiar. But Sean doesn't know there's a horrible reason for Nicole's choices in men--and his attempt at protecting her may have blown every chance he'll ever have with the one girl he loves.

Approximately 50,000 words or 200 print pages.

To Be With You is book 1 of the loosely connected Sunset Series.
Sunset Series in order:
1. To Be With You (Sean's story)
2. Out of the Blue (Justin's story)
3. To Love You More (Chandler's story)

1.0 out of 5 stars This book was torture May 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
OMG. I suffered through this book. I was fine with the first half of the book. But by then there was no growth from either of the characters. She was the worst clearly broken and as far as i can see, she never really recovered from her trauma. Her character was childish and was 26 but still trapped as a 13 year old. There is no way anyone could love this broken person for 13 years. She did not love herself and continued to be a victim by self torture.
( she deliberately dated the worst men she could find as penance even when she knew she had a great guy in love with her patiently waiting for her to give him a chance)
I felt pity for the guy because he could have moved on but chose not to do so and waste his time waiting on her. I could not wait for this book to end because the unrealistic story line just annoyed the crap out of me. REALLY, Trust me on this one don't waste your time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and Uplifting! May 8, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I really enjoyed this book! It was easy to connect and bond with the characters, which left me rooting for their success. I love an engaging read where you go on a journey with your characters; and that is exactly the kind of story Melon wrote here.
Nicole has her secrets she's holding onto, and it seems every man she dates causes her to push them deeper down inside. That is, until a childhood friend enters her life and turns things upside down. Nicole doesn't recognize him, which allows Sean a unique chance to help his friend and show her what it means to love.
Melon weaves a message about love, redemption, and hope. It was definitely worth my time. I had to buy the second one!

3.0 out of 5 stars Sweet but missing a worthy ending May 29, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a sweet story. I don't mean to say there weren't any darker elements (abuse) but i enjoyed how the author brought the story out. Two shy people, one with serious self-confidence issues and the other one never having dealt much with people of the opposite sex but in love with the other character since childhood. This was a story about relationship insecurities. Sometimes i wanted to slap the heroine because she was a little confused but i could see why she had acted the way she did; it was just that sometimes i couldn't connect with those feelings. Mayhap because i've never experienced what she did. I enjoyed the hero because he was a bit goofy and had his own insecurities. I love me some alpha males but sometimes a man who's strong but still kinda weird does it for me.I loved their IM'ing; seemed realand i had a good laugh. My only real heartache was with the ending. I need some closure and this didn't give it to me. Will there be a sequel? I don't know but it wasn't finished for me and since i spent half a day reading about these insecure, mostly likeable people, i wanted to see them do more than say "let's see how this goes". I was a bit disapponted, however, will read this author again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest and real June 9, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The book addresses how sexual, physical, psychological and emotional abuse of children/people has a direct bearing on how they perceive themselves. It addresses the struggle and pain involved in trying to heal while showing how unconditional love and acceptance can be a soothing balm to an injured soul and help the healing process along. I loved this story and the way the characters were developed. very well written and different from the typical romance novel. I'd classify this one as more of a real life, real issue type of story that could have happened to any one of us. It does address some very dark topics but life is not always beautiful moments and roses. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to read a story with some substance to it. Definitely not your man meets woman with sparks flying through eternity type of novel, to be sure. This one definitely forces the reader to address some of life's darker areas and the healing power of true love.

2.0 out of 5 stars A little confused.... July 9, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
First of all I love Japanese manga and anime. This book put me in the mind of Houran Host Club :) but the story line was a little unrealistic, they didn't know what each other looked like for 8 years? They didn't know how to send a picture? The heroines personally was just.... bleh. And his character just loved emotional torture. I can't.

1.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Finish It September 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
***Note*** I didn't finish this book. I tried to. I wanted to, and I've kept it on my Kindle, just in case I want to give it another try.

To Be With You is the love story of Nicole and Sean. Nicole and Sean were best friends as children. Nicole moved away when Sean was eleven to live with her Aunt but they kept in contact through letters and eventually, with the evolving world of technology, through email and instant messaging.

Nicole has a disastrous dating history: she always goes for the wrong man. He starts out fine, but turns into a womanizer or abuser. After a series of failed relationships, she decides to try her hand at a "host club"--a dating club, called Club Blue, where the men are charming, fashionable, and treat women with respect. After all, it is part of their job description.

Nichole tells Sean during one of their chat sessions that she's going to check out "Club Blue" to find an escort for an event she has to attend. She goes for an interview as a potential client and meets with Hope, the co-owner of the establishment and three male hosts, to decide which would suit her for her event. After talking to Justin, Jason and "John," she senses something familiar with the man who calls himself "John." He reminds her so much of her best friend Sean. He should. He is Sean.

Sean, as "John" knows that his facial features and body have changed over the years since Nicole last saw him, but to hide his identity during their initial meeting, he wears a mask over his eyes and tells her his name is John. This causes the other two escorts to raise their eyebrows, but they don't give away his secret.

Nicole picks John/Sean as her date and soon realizes that he is her childhood friend Sean, but doesn't let on.

More About the Author

I'm Opal Mellon and I love to read. I spent my whole childhood reading and haven't stopped since. I like to think it's because my parents didn't let me watch TV growing up, but it's probably also because I was an awkward, painfully introverted kid who found friends in book pages. I love to read romance and literary fiction most, though I'm recently on a Young Adult spree because there's so much good stuff out there and it's clean!

I'm also an author. I've written three romances without cursing or graphic sexuality because I believe part of the fun of reading a book is sharing it with others. I know many women would love to read romances that they could discuss and share with their teen daughters or their mothers, while still getting adult, complex, and romantic stories to enjoy. I work hard to keep the level of tension and character development high, and the content rating low.

I'd love to hear from you at opalmellon(at) with any questions, concerns, or comments. I so appreciate your time and consideration of my series.

Thank you and happy reading,
