Book Description

If retirement is looming close or if you're looking for financial freedom at any age, you need to know the answer to this critical question: What is the maximum amount of money you can withdraw from savings without running out of money before you run out of life?

It is vital to know your safe withdrawal rate because it determines the lifestyle you can afford. It also determines the amount of savings you need to fund it. It will literally make or break your financial security.

Get your safe withdrawal rate correct and you maximize the amount of income you can spend. Get it wrong and you can kiss your lifestyle goodbye—or even go broke.

Few financial experts really understand the complexity of safe withdrawal rates and how practical solutions work. Instead, they apply oversimplified rules of thumb—like the 4% rule—and arrive at dangerously misleading conclusions.

This book dives deep into the subject with a brief yet complete analysis that can be understood in a single evening. It provides a readable solution written in everyday language and earned praise from leading academic researchers.

This book distills everything valid and eliminates everything invalid, providing you with a one-stop, definitive solution.

This book teaches you everything you need to know to make a smart financial decision.

In just one evening, you'll learn:
• how not knowing the limitations of the 4% rule can make you go broke.
• how to know the exact amount you can withdraw from your savings and still live a comfortable lifestyle.
• how to leapfrog past the 4% rule using 3rd generation research.
• how to create a dynamic model that accurately calculates your safe withdrawal rate.

Todd Tresidder, former hedge fund manager and founder of FinancialMentor.com, has produced the current definitive guide to the static 4% Safe Withdrawal Rule, and its probable demise.

This book helps to bridge the gap between academia and the real world. Tresidder walks us through the history of safe withdrawal rate research, explains that the 4% rule is a "2nd generation" model, and goes on to explore the ongoing 3rd generation of research. Among other factors, that research puts more emphasis on dynamic market valuations and early investment returns, to correct some of the shortcomings of the 2nd generation model. Other critical retirement planning/modeling topics in the book include backcasting, sequence of returns risk, market valuations, inflation, and retiree withdrawal/spending behavior.

In a nutshell, this is a great value, a relatively quick and easy read given the subject, and absolutely critical knowledge for anybody approaching or planning for retirement. Highly recommended, even required reading!

Easy to read and exceptionally clear analysis of the limitations of conventional wisdom on safe withdrawal strategies. There is no "silver bullet" here, but the realities of market valuations and interest rate trends on a specific retirement date are a sobering reminder that managing retirement income is a "hands on" process that must continually adapt to current market circumstances. The fact that this is tough to do well is one reason that the 4% rule and its variants survive -- it's easy to understand and implement. But the price of that course may be a failed retirement income plan.

Great book, really brings you down to earth and get's your thinking set in the right direction. Most financial planners will never go this deep, with this much data. Makes you feel a bit apprehensive, but gives you good suggestions to update your plan. This author has other books, some of which I've read -- definitely recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars The 4 percent rule and safe withdrawal rate September 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a very interesting book that points out a lot of variables that must be reviewed before retiring. You can not take the 4 Percent rule and treat it as gospel. This book does list and discuss most of the variables in plain language. this is a must read for anybody planning retirement.
