3.0 out of 5 stars Better than book two, still not as good as book one.
John Passarella, Wither's Legacy (Pocket, 2004)

The good news: Wither's Legacy is a much better book than Wither's Rain. John Passarella has learned from some of his mistakes. The bad news: Joseph Gangemi has still not returned to the fold, and John Passarella's work on its own is still nowhere near as strong as the work they produced in collaboration...

But although she may have destroyed Wither physically, her legacy still continues in a bitter curse she placed upon Wendy in her final dying moments. Bram Stoker Award-winner John Passarella has done it again with his latest novel, 'Wither's Legacy', the third (and possibly final) chilling part to the critically-acclaimed Wendy Ward series.

Passarella has already proven himself a gifted storyteller with `Wither' and `Wither's Rain', and `Wither's Legacy' is no exception. His plotting, dialogue, and attention to detail are as accurate as ever, drawing the reader in for more after every page. You also can't help but feel that the author's understanding of his characters is as strong as ever, but that still doesn't stop him from killing who he wants, and when.

For a chilling read this winter (or any time), 'Wither's Legacy' comes as highly recommended as you can get. A fine choice for any bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this Series!, October 18, 2004

Once again, John Passarella has outdone himself. I have loved the Wither series since the first book, and each one keeps getting better. We see less of Wither in this book, with a Wendigo following Wendy instead. Kayla is also back in black with some worries of her own, Hannah's character takes new shape, and even Alex is here - bound and determined for a little more action with Wendy. Read the book and see what I mean. You won't be dissappointed! I can't wait to read more.

5.0 out of 5 stars You may never sleep again..., July 19, 2004
This review is from: Wither's Legacy: A Wendy Ward Novel (Wendy Ward Novels) (Mass Market Paperback)
There was an ancient evil formerly known as Elizabeth Wither, an evil that had existed in dozens of human hosts over the thousands of years of its existence. Wendy Ward destroyed Wither and thought the evil was defeated. She was wrong. As Wither died she cursed Wendy and now the young Wiccan must use her supernatural gifts to defeat it.

The curse calls upon a seven-foot-tall monster with razor-sharp teeth and a taste for human flesh. An enchantment camouflages the beast so it looks human. It views a magical line, like a rope, that leads straight to Wendy no matter where she roams. Once it kills Wendy it will be free. Its hunt begins.

Wendy is aided by Alex (her boyfriend), the Crone (Hannah's future self), ten-year-old Abby (who is a shapeshifter), and Kayla (who is still contaminated with Wither's black blood). Wendy must learn more magic and quickly. The creature is closing in and time is running out.

***** Books by John Passarella make it very difficult to sleep at night. If you have an over active imagination, you may never sleep again! This one will chill you to the very marrow of your bones. Excellent! *****

5.0 out of 5 stars Passarella's Best Yet, October 6, 2004

This review is from: Wither's Legacy: A Wendy Ward Novel (Wendy Ward Novels) (Mass Market Paperback)
Wither's Legacy is Passarella's best book yet! It is the third installment of a series (which he says he may continue - I'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed) and I would recommend you read the other 2 novels first (Wither and Wither's Rain). However, reading the other two novels is not necessary to understand this novel. Passarella artfully weaves in the back-story from the other novels without boring readers already familiar with it.

Wendy Ward, a powerful witch, has incurred great personal loss due to her conflicts with Wither, and evil being that corrupt humans. Thinking she has finally defeated Wither's evil for good, Wendy attempts to escape from her past. Little does she know that Wither has cursed her and an unknown evil being is coming to kill Wendy.

Wendy must now learn what this evil is while learning what Wither's ultimate plans had been for Wendy, Hannah, Abby and Kayla.

This book will keep you hooked until the very last page. I found myself reading this any chance I got - lunch breaks, after I got home clear through the time I reluctantly turned out the lights to go to sleep.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wither's Legacy keeps you on the edge of your seat!, October 4, 2004
This review is from: Wither's Legacy: A Wendy Ward Novel (Wendy Ward Novels) (Mass Market Paperback)
"Wither's Legacy" is the exciting third book of the Wendy Ward series. Usually by the time you reach the third book of a series, you're pretty sure which direction the characters will grow, and what paths their stories will take. I can honestly say that this isn't the case for this wonderfully written series. John Passarella has continued to treat us to an unpredictable story as we follow the growth of not only Wendy Ward, but also the rest of the cast.

The story opens with Wendy recovering from the tragedy which ended the second book, WITHER'S RAIN. We find her in Canada, staying with fellow Wiccan Tara while she recovers her balance. The fast paced story takes off from that wintery region, and speeds across the continent until we're back in Windale, Mass.- the home of the centuries-old Wither and the location of culmination of the curse Wither laid upon Wendy through the dying Gina Thorne.

John Passarella again proves that we need not make assumptions on his characters, as what we would assume most likely won't happen. Get ready for a fun, fast paced ride with Wendy as she confronts the curse invoked by Wither, and readies herself to face her future. What it holds in store for her, even she can't imagine.

5.0 out of 5 stars exciting action-packed horror thriller, September 29, 2004
This review is from: Wither's Legacy: A Wendy Ward Novel (Wendy Ward Novels) (Mass Market Paperback)
In Massachusetts, young Wiccan Wendy Ward defeated the malevolent Elizabeth Wither (and her evil coven of followers), a being that has existed for millenniums leaping from one human body to another (see WITHER'S RAIN). Wendy is proud of her seemingly impossible achievement over an apparently invincible immortal, but looks forward to some needed rest and recuperation.

However, Wendy has no time to relax even with Wither dead. Before she died, the evil one set in motion a gigantic monster, who enjoys feasting on human flesh, but along with Wither's curse she also cast a camouflage spell to hide the killing machine inside the body of a human. The cretin has one goal kill and that is to kill Wendy. Once that is achieved the control by Wither will end. Anyone in the path of this monster will die. Wendy accompanied by her boyfriend, the Crone, a shapeshifting preadolescent, and someone tainted by Wither's evil blood prepares for a magical showdown.

The third "Wither's" tale is an exciting action-packed horror thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Wendy is a wonderful heroine who will remind readers in some ways of Buffy, but is unique in her own fashion. Her latest opponent, WITHER'S LEGACY, is an incredible killing machine with an obsessive quest that is personal because his personal goal is to break free of the bewitching, but to achieve this he must complete the mission by killing his assigned target; no one lives who stands in his straight lined path to Wendy. This action-packed thriller requires setting aside time with lights left on after completing John Pasarella's terrific tale in one tense evening of reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wendy and gang back again!!!!, October 15, 2004
This review is from: Wither's Legacy: A Wendy Ward Novel (Wendy Ward Novels) (Mass Market Paperback)
Wendy and other mainstays return in Mr. Passarella's third installment of the Wither (Wendy Ward) series. Wendy finds herself in Canada, and far away from Windale. Wither and the problems that she has caused keep plaguing Wendy. Back in Windale, her friend Kayla is plagued as well, thinking that she has Wither's blood in her and that she is doomed. Wendy and Alex get back together for the trip back to Windale. There is unfinished business there and a Wendigo is hot on their trail. They return to Windale for preparation. They recover Wither's journal and learn some valuable information from it, but it doesn't completely satisfy Kayla and her worries of her inevitable transformation. Their preparation is cut short when the Wendigo finds them in Windale. An exciting battle ensues with some old friends there to help the fight.

Yet another great read in this series. Mr. Passarella keeps you interested from the get go and doesn't stop. It seems that with each book he tops himself. I can't wait to read more from him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this book, you'll be hooked on Passarella, October 14, 2004
This review is from: Wither's Legacy: A Wendy Ward Novel (Wendy Ward Novels) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book contains supernatural elements and is considered horror, but it doesn't contain so much gore and graphic detail as some books do. It still has a lot of suspense and suprises for the reader and Wendy. I really enjoyed reading about Wendy and the obstacles she faces in this novel. The author provides enough backstory for each character so that reading the first two novels isn't necessary to enjoy this book. I didn't get a chance to read them before, but I certainly will now, because I really enjoyed his writing style and the depth that he gives his characters. It's easy to become attached to them and hope they survive what's coming to visit.
