A comprehensive overview of Collins' remarkable recording career from her earliest, 1955 recordings, to a song recorded in 2002. 21, of the 84 tracks presented here, are previously unreleased. 16 rare recordings including the original demo for 'Whitsun Dance' & 'Honour Bright' featuring Collins with Steve Ashley & a selection of rare live recordings from throughout her career, the earliest being 1964. Includes a 56-page full color booklet complete with biographical essays, full track details & detailed song notes. Written contributions from Billy Bragg, Alan Lomax & John Halsted, with previously unseen photos & memorabilia. Standard jewel cases housed in a box (approx. 12 x 6 x 1). Proper. 2002.

I was unsure about buying this box set for a couple of reasons. These were that I had a fair bit of it already and it is expensive. If that is all that is stopping you then get out now and buy it, it is superb. It has an excellent, informative book, terrific sound, a large number of rarities and previously unreleased tracks. It also includes some recordings Shirley made with other groups such as the Albion Band and saves you buying (in a few cases) whole CD's for one or two tracks. The box also includes a Pete Frame "family tree" and a fairly (completely?) complete discography. If you like Shirley Collins you will love this, if you like English traditional music you will love this, if you have ears you will love this.
