The self-released Like A Ship (Without a Sail) saw Jesse Jackson Jr. ally Barrett channel his passionate love of music, determination to help keep children off the streets, and wholly engaging preaching (which attracted the likes of Earth, Wind & Fire and Donny Hathaway to his Mount Zion Baptist Church sermons) into a musical offering bolstered by Chess Records' sax hero/arranger Gene Barge and backed by a cast of music players including Richard Evans, Phil Upchurch and the rapturous vocals of the Youth for Christ Choir. Sanctified grooves, breaks, beats, and spiritual praise, delivered with a righteous and infectious chorus.

This is quite simply awe inspiring funk choir. So righteous, so fully packed. This received a very limited release, initially. Now it's unearthed for all to marvel. Phil Upchurch and some studio pros handle the groove, T.L., Phebe Hines, Loretta Lake, and T.L.'s well rehearsed youth choir, the vocals. Light in the Attic has shone on a bright shiny little nugget. Before I heard this I was like a ship without a sail. Phish played this through their PA, pre-show 1/1/2011 at MSG in NYC. Praise be.
