Book Description

Lift yourself from a mundane life, become immersed in this exciting story

"A devastating relationship, a romantic mystery" "A heartbreaking millionaire romance..." "I appreciated Latin lovers... this was very tasteful..." "Poignant and delightfully written, a natural storyteller... " "beautiful Latin romance..."

Without Reproach is an intriguing mystery set in the stunning Costa Blanca, a Latin romance between a millionaire businessman and a working-class girl - "... Barnett excels at creating varied, well-developed characters and an emotion-packed story."

- La Finca Piedra is a beautiful Spanish villa and riding school, nestling under the sierras of the Costa Blanca. Jenny, born and raised in England, has no idea why she inherited it from Millionaire Spanish artist, Juan Garcia. She is not related to him, has never heard of him, never met him, and certainly never been to this villa before... So why does she recognize things in this rich man's home?

There are things about the ancient villa that are uncomfortably familiar… then Jenny freaks out when she finds a painting of herself in the entrance to the villa - totally naked.

Eduardo, twenty years younger than half-brother Juan, is the main beneficiary of the Will. Conflict erupts out of Eduardo’s single-minded resolve to preserve the finca for the García family, and Jenny’s equal determination not to give it up. However, the longer she is there the less she understands, and she begins to question her sanity...

Direct and compelling, WITHOUT REPROACH is a red hot Latin romance about intrigue, deception, and self-torment, the struggle between the arrogance of man and the inner strength of woman, a story of illicit emotions and dark secrets; a love story.

Mrs Joanne Beech -

Set in the magnificent hills of the northern Costa Blanca, this story covers a sweeping range of emotions. Intrigue, deception, disappointment, romantic desire, anger, and passion - they are all here, simmering beneath a surface of self-control.”

Nik Morton -
“An adult bittersweet love story with an intriguing mystery at its core…”

Mrs. B. M. Dix "Sunshine" -
“A spellbinding, sympathetic modern Spanish romance.”

Mrs Bertha Sampson -
"A lovely clean romance in kindle books."

3.0 out of 5 stars 3-1/2 stars- Mixed feelings here July 31, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I have really mixed feelings about this book. Parts of it I really, really liked, while others parts I did not care for. The book grabbed me right in the beginning and drew me in, but it soon got too slow for me and felt too drawn out. Then, about halfway through the book, it got very exciting. For a while, I didn't want to put it down, reading until about 1 a.m. Then again, around the 80% mark on my Kindle, it got a little slow again, almost until the end. Now, it's not that I expected (or even wanted) non-stop excitement, but there were just chunks of the book that I thought could have been condensed or re-worked, while there were other parts I thought could have been expanded on.

Something that kept startling me was the way that the author unexpectedly jumped through time. There were times when from one sentence, one section, or one chapter to the next, days, weeks, months or years would pass. And this would oftentimes happen right at an exciting moment. The last thing you expect is to skip ahead days, weeks, months or years right at a crucial moment. The shift in time disoriented me and several times disappointed me, as I wanted more of what had been happening in the characters lives at the time. Case in point is the ending. I was very disappointed in it because it just ended. On one level, everything was wrapped up, but so much was left unsaid on a personal level between Jenny and Eduardo. After having invested so much time and yes, emotion, into their lives, I wanted more details.

The book was well-written, though. I really thought the author brought the locale to life. The mystery elements were intriguing. I'm not sure I'd really call it a "suspense" book because there really wasn't any danger or "bad guy", just really a mystery of the past to be solved.

The main character is Jenny Bucknall, who is recovering from a car crash when she discovers she has inherited half of La Finca Piedra from a Spanish artist, Juan Garcia. The mystery is that she didn't know her benefactor and nobody seems able or willing to help her get to the bottom of it. When she's well enough, she visits the finca and is stunned to find a great deal of the place is familiar, yet she'd never been there... Worse, she finds hanging on the wall a nude portrait of her - executed by the dead Juan.

While there is no great villain of the piece, there is an unpleasant writer of anonymous letters who seems to know more than Jenny about Juan's past and possibly hers too.

The co-owner of the finca is Eduardo, the younger half-brother of Juan. Attractive and used to getting his own way, Eduardo is in politics and doesn't want Jenny there. He's determined to buy her out. She stubbornly refuses, drawn by the mystery of the finca. This stubbornness and independence causes her much grief as, like a moth to the flame, Jenny is drawn to Eduardo...

The blurb suggests that some aspects of the book are racy; in fact, they're erotic, and well done. Indeed, this is an adult bittersweet romance with an intriguing mystery at its core.

Barnett has infused these two main characters with life. Like other accomplished novelists, Barnett has made his characters live with the reader and inhabit your mind during the reading process. His familiarity with Spain and the people is evident and lends authenticity to Jenny's emotional journey of discovery; discovery of self and the long concealed past.

There are no easy answers, it seems; I found this to be a satisfying well-written novel.

An extremely well planned and written novel of intrigue, passion and suspense. Once started- couldn't put it down. Combines all the elements of a good novel with the writers obvious enjoyment of life and the result is well worth reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing March 28, 2012
Without Reproach is the story of Jenny and her mysterious inheritance. She goes on a mission to find out why she received the inheritance and who gave it to her. During her journey she encounters Eduardo, a handsome man who is also a mystery. What does he know about her inheritance? Can he be trusted?

Without Reproach is an intriguing story with interesting characters. The scenery is beautiful and makes you want to be there. This is a great read for lovers of mystery and romance. I would love to read a sequel to this book.
