A routine missing persons case gets major investigation when a prominent surgeon who happens to know people on the force finds his missing daughter murdered. This is just the tip of the iceberg in Director Mario Caiano's excellent thriller 'WITHOUT TRACE' aka '...A TUTTE LE AUTO DELLA POLIZIA', a film which Mya Communication lists as a Giallo but it definitely leans more to a police investigative affair. It is a prerequisite to the 'CSI', 'NCIS' and 'WITHOUT A TRACE' crime shows of late and it doesn't miss a beat. The cast is awesome with two venerable Italian actors locking horns : Enrico Maria Salerno as the chief of police and Gabrielle Ferzetti as the surgeon. The scene stealer is Antonio Sabato as the relentless investigator who steps over all the cover ups to get the killer. Sleazy Franco Ressel from'SABATA' has a great cameo and unfortunately the beautiful Luciana Paluzzi joins the party but has little to do as an assistant investigator. Mario Caiano touched many genres and is probably best known for the Barbara Steele gothic 'NIGHTMARE CASTLE' but this may be his finest hour. Mya Communication once again comes through with a wonderfully rare Euro-release in a full screen crisp transfer in Italian with English Sub-titles. It'll keep you guessing till the very end.

I watched this film because Mario Caiano directed and I had seen the excellent Eye of the Labyrinth. Without trace is a different type of film - a cross between the police type procedural and the giallo - it begins slowly and is very detailed in the investigation - like CSI - but it picks up in the second half and turns into a traditional giallo with some fine murder scenes. There is some good location photography and Caiano has a way of making routine scenes memorable with clever use of the camera - worth a look, but maybe falls between genres to entirely satisfy fans of either genre
