5.0 out of 5 stars A GOOD "boy band"!!, September 12, 2001
This review is from: Without You (Audio CD)
Phat Chance is Flickerrecords.com's newest and youngest addition. Being widely described as "not your average boy band" you might still be expecting cheesy pop tunes, choreographed dance moves, and a lack of musical and artistic talent. This definitely is not the case with Phat Chance. These "boys" play their own instruments, write their own songs, and thankfully don't dance in concert. Their music is pop with some modern rock mixed in.

"Things You Do" has great rocky guitar hooks; it's one of my favorite songs on the album both musically and lyrically. It is a song about the second chance God gives us, despite our pasts, when we come to follow Him. "What if you could see that your life could change if you believed? / There are open arms giving life to all, waiting to make you new." The song "Protection" is based on Psalm 18:1-3 "'I love You, O Lord, my strength.' The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliver, My God, my rock in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, And I am saved from my enemies." The song is a really cool reminder that God is always watching out for us, protecting us despite what is going on in our lives or the world around us.

"Hide Their Eyes" is a softer ballad, it's a prayer to God to "hide the eyes" of those watching them in the spotlight when they make mistakes. They want others to see Jesus in them, and not fall because of the mistakes they make as human beings. The title track, "Without You", is about times we turn away from God only to find that we are nothing without Him. "Give You Everything" is a catchy pop-rock song about giving everything we do, every second of every day to God. The song is a great reminder to us, the listeners, as well as the band. "The One" is the band's song of commitment to their future wives. They are committed to pursuing purity and abstinence until God reveals the wives He has chosen for them. The addition of Dawn Chere's smooth R&Bish vocals add the perspective of the ladies that are also waiting for the husbands God has for them. This touching song is a great ending to the album.

Any fan of good pop-rock music will love this album. I really enjoy the fact that included in the CD booklet, along with the lyrics, are short explanations of each song, and the verses from the Bible that inspired them. These young musicians really have hearts for Jesus Christ and talent for songwriting. If you look past the "boy band" image and just listen to the music, I think you will find that the music is really enjoyable and the lyrics are really relevant to each of our lives...

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS CD, August 25, 2002

This CD is AWESOME! Unlike a lot of Christian artists these days, every song on the album is about God. None of this halfway junk! Phat Chance is amazing! I really needed something like this to get me back on track, and I just totally love it. Believe me, I'm skipping my HOMECOMING for these guys, I really like them! Ok, well I have to go now, but BUY THIS CD AND LISTEN TO IT OVER AND OVER UNTIL YOU'VE MEMORIZED ALL THE WORDS AND THEN LISTEN TO IT SOME MORE!

Phat Chance has proven that they have great talent and are on their way to the top of the chart. They play thier own instruments which earns them alot of points not only with the critics but also with their fans. If not for the cover you would never guess you were listening to a group of young men between the ages of 14 and 19. Their music makes you think. They bring a whole new meaning to "boy band".

This is one my favorite albums!!!!! These guys are totally praising God with all their heart, soul, and mind!! The music has a very mature pop/rock sound with excellent drums especially (the drummer is very cool:)) They introduce all of their songs in the lyrics with the scripture that the song is based off of. They have very fun, catchy songs. My favorites are Just a Little and Love Somebody. If you don't buy this Cd, you must be crazy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Christian Music at it's BEST!, September 4, 2001
By
This review is from: Without You (Audio CD)
AMAZING! That is the one word that comes to mind when I first heard this CD. They are so incredibly unique and you can tell that there's a thirst for God in their hearts! Five boys- ages 14 to 19 who not only play their own instruments but wrote the lyrics and music to every song in this CD. I was so impressed, I went and saw them live in concert. If anything, it's 3 times better than the CD! These five are truly blessed by God and each have amazing talents. Phat Chance has a very unique pop/rock sound in each of their songs. Very appealing to the teenage audience and can relate better than any group I've seen. This is one CD you don't have to skip songs on! Definately worth buying!

5.0 out of 5 stars I don't get it., September 18, 2001

How can anyone call these guys a boy band? They just don't play that type of music. Similar to the situation with Jake. Ya, they are around that age of most normal boy bands, their two radio singles sounded like boy band music, but the entire album is spread with melodic rock; NOT boy band stuff. It's probably because of these guys' age (14-19) which is why so many people instantly call them a boy band, but they're not. Last I heard age doesn't determing the genre of music your band is in.

Anyway, after getting that point accross, let me comment on what I thought of the album :)

Frankly, the whole experience was a rather pleasant one. Some songs were catchy, some songs were deep lyrically. Yet, overall, I felt that this album just wasn't completed. Don't ask me why because I probably won't be able to explain why exactly I think that. But upon hearing the album in full, I was like, 'that's it'? Maybe one or two more songs would've helped. Anyway, that doesn't take anything away from the quality of music given by PC. I give this album a thumbs up, and a cudos to the 'group of boys' :)

Check my other reviews for great Christian CDs, Books, movies, etc.
