Book Description

September 15, 1999
Witness to the Blues is a book of superb black & white photographs and reminiscences about blues artists. Written by a die-hard blues fan (and muscian) John Gibbs Rockwood, the book takes the reader on a blues journey from Detroit to Toledo to Chicago and on down to the Mississipi Delta. Included are photos and stories about Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, Lightnin' Hopkins, Honey Boy Edwards and many others. Witness to the Blues is a deeply personal first-hand look at blues singers and shouters that every blues fan should own. As noted by blues historian and impresario John Sinclair in his introduction to the book, "John Rockwood's remarkable photographs reveal the blues in the faces and postures of the artists. His words personalize and enrich the context of their performances."

About the Author

John Gibbs Rockwood is every blues player's idea of the perfect fan. He doesn't just listen, he hears. Hears the joy and the pain and the heartache of the blues. A life-long resident of Toledo, Ohio, John has traveled the country in search of blues haunts and come back each time with a stack of photos and stories that tell the true meaning of the blues. Although he's always kept his day job, John's real passion is for music. He doesn't just watch it, he plays it (harmonica and washboard) in his own blues and R&B band, Voodoo Libido. He is, indeed, a Witness to the Blues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Photos!, October 9, 2000
This review is from: Witness to the Blues (Paperback)
This wonderful book captures many of our most revered bluesmen both behind the scenes and on stage. Not only are the photographs brilliant - just look at Lightnin' Hopkins with his Schlitz in hand at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival or B.B. pointing at the ladies from the stage - but Rockwood's stories let you feel like you've been hanging out with these great artists yourself. By all means, buy this book and you'll know H Bomb Ferguson, J.B. Hutto and Floyd Jones too!
