Book Description

Startlingly beautiful in its content and powerfully eloquent in its message, Witness captures 100 species of North American animals and plants on the brink of extinction in a series of stunning color and duotone portraits. By photographing each imperiled creature against a stark black or white backdrop, photographers Susan Middleton and David Liittschwager visually remove the habitat that would ensure its survival and bring the plight of the individual species -- whether a majestic Florida panther or a delicate Tennessee purple coneflower -- closer to home. A bibliography and an index, a resource giude to additional information sources, an eloquent introduction by E. O. Wilson, and an essay on the Endangered Species Act complete this formidable volume, making it not only an elegant and moving documentary, but a valuable tool in the fight for the preservation of diminishing habitats and the species that depend on them.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Middleton and Liittschwager (Here Today: Portraits of Our Vanishing Species, Chronicle, 1991) have photographed 100 of the plants and animals currently on North America's Endangered Species list. Some of the subjects are eminently charismatic: the Florida panther, red wolf, grizzly bear, and manatee. Others, such as the Furbish lousewort and the American burying beetle, probably would not elicit much of an emotional response from most people. But the authors have lavished as much care and attention on the pictures of the lowliest plants as on the majestic eagle, thus sending the message that each endangered species is unique, exquisite, and precious in the web of life. Each stunning photo is accompanied by brief text explaining the natural history of the species. Recommended for public libraries and photography collections.

From Booklist

In this beautifully produced, foot-high album of animal and plant portraiture--a photographic genre of which, for most who care about nature, there cannot be too many examples--each life-form depicted is on the national list of endangered species. Each appears on a two-page spread, usually in both color and black-and-white shots and accompanied by the briefest summary of the threats it faces, its range, its habitat, its current population, the date it was listed as endangered, and the degree of its endangerment. Following the portraits, in each of which the species is seen in stark relief and high resolution against a neutral, uniform backdrop, comes a section of prose profiles of the species arranged alphabetically by common name, from ae'o (the Hawaiian stilt) to the Wyoming toad. A spellbindingly gaze-worthy addition to both the natural history and the fine photography shelves. Ray Olson

I find that this book is excellent for providing accurate background information on the animals and plants as well as portraying each species with characteristic body language. This is by far my favorite photography book as a piece of art as well as a biological reference tool.
