Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Even though it may be easy enough to find a quote online, books of quotations are still great fun for both the casual browser and the serious writer. Byrne’s book is a fresh collection of creative zingers, from famous as well as lesser-known sources. Categories include the expected “Dating,” “Children,” “Education,” and “Politics” as well as the amusing “Hooey” and “Stupidity.” A good, affordable choice for public library collections. --Rebecca Vnuk

About the Author

Robert Byrne is the author of seven novels, five collections of humorous quotations, seven books on billiards, and an exposé of frauds in the literary world. Byrne was born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa, where he has a regular humor column in the Dubuque Herald Times. Visit his website at Byrne.org.

There are a ton of quotations out there on the internet falsely attributed to certain celebrities. People like George Carlin, John Stewart, Andy Rooney, etc. always seem to get words put in their mouth. Even though there are websites that make the effort to correct these mistakes (Snopes, Wikiquote, the official websites for such celebrities, etc.), they still persist. Some people even go so far as to print these misattributions in physical books without researching them! That's what the author has done for many of the quotes in here. Granted there's a "sources" section in the back which justifies some of the actual authentic quotes, but again the rest of it is just terribly researched. He even says himself: "Want to know more about the people quoted and the things they have said? Google them. That's why I did." Yeah, and it shows.

This is the perfect book for casual, quick reading and is certain to put a smile on your face. You can find a good lead-in line for any subject, and is a fine bathroom reader as well as coffee table picker-upper.

I got this for an older gentleman for Christmas. He has read it through twice! Can't put it down. Every time we talk he says something about it. Laughs his head off. Highly recommend it!!!

I have four friends that I bought this book for: A cancer victim, who is a great friend, another great friend with a heart condition, and my son who needs to relax and enjoy the world more. LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE!
The 4thi was for my Doctor, who has a great sense of humor. I always feel better when I leave a visit with him. He is truly human, not puffed up , self effacing and a person that you know is really interested in you, not your money.

Bought this for my husband. He read it out loud a few times and we all enjoyed it. Some quotes I've heard before, but overall it was entertaining. We do have to edit when kids are around.....some of the sections are not kid friendly.

These short sayings are witty and amusing, but it soon becomes difficult to keep the attention level up. A few pages and I lose interest. But it is fun to go back from time to time and enjoy a sample. A bit like cake with too much icing.

Interestingly, this may be an example of content that might be more effective in printed form than under the consecutive page restrictions of Kindle. With a book it is easier to flip pages and move to other sections, so the organization by topic is less restrictive.

Perhaps it's my generation, but I found this book very disappointing. You have only one or two quotes from P.G. Wodehouse, who is considered one of the wittiest writers of all times....not enough Mark Twain...and too many TV personalities quotes, whom I do not know, and were not witty, in my opinion. Therefore I was not too pleased, and would not recommend it to others....Sorry!

A fan of "quote collection" books, this one is so well put-together, it has become one of my favorites. It may be that I'm simple minded, but every time I pick up this book, an audible laugh will follow. Warning: Don't think you can just pick it up briefly for a quickie. It won't let you.
(How can so many people be so clever?! They could have left one or two quips to the rest of us.) Every page is worth every penny.
