After the carbide insert upgrade over the three HSS blades, the Wixey gauge really completes the upgrades. It was very easy to install after you figure out in what order to install the "L" brackets to your machine so that you get a good fit and one that puts the unit close to the machines planer opening. I bought the 12" VS the 8" for ease of installation. Even though my machine only has 8 inches of travel, the 12" enabled me to fully install it to the base and this product comes with the remote readout. I installed the gauge on the right hand input side of the planer and the digital readout is right alongside the thickness wheel. Very easy to calibrate too!

If your just running rough cut lumber through a planer to knock off the sawmills cut marks and thickness is not a concern, then this item is not necessary. But if you want to accurately dimension your boards so you can join them together for various woodworking projects, then this little gem is your ticket. I have found that if you need a board planned to a specific thickness to match other boards that were planned at another time, there is a lot of time spent adjusting, cutting and measuring as you zero in on that magic number and not to over cut. With this unit you just calibrate it using the thickness of the stock you want to match then as you surface your boards and get ready for the final pass, just set your planar cutting head using the Wixey Readout as your guide and out comes a board that should exactly match your existing stock.

This unit was for my Powermatic 15" HH. The Scale Assembly is mounted using existing drilled and threaded holes on the side having the wheel for raising and lowering the cutter head. The readout was placed on top of the chip collection hood using Velcro tape for easy reading. A little care should be taken when mounting the Scale Assembly to make sure it is secure, aligned and has unrestricted movement. I did all of that and my unit works super.

I had the Wixey WR510 Digital Planer Readout with Fractions when I was stuck with my portable planer, and loved it. I recently bought the Powermatic 90th Anniversary edition of the Powermatic 1791213 15HH 3 HP 15-Inch Planer with 230-Volt 1 Phase Byrd Shelix Helical Cutterhead and hooked up the DRO that was included. Wow, for as good as the HH15 is, their included Digital Gauge is utter crap. It didn't even last the day before I took it off and ordered the Wixey.

From the physical installation, to the fine calibration, this Wixey is right on the money. It did take me a couple hours to setup, but it certainly wasn't difficult. It attaches to the planer with metal screws, and is a rock solid installation. You calibrate the unit by planing an arbitrary thickness and then using the scale itself to measure that thickness relative to the scale readers position on the scale slide. It's really a slick way of setting the calibration, and most importantly, it's dead accurate.

Oh, and the fact it uses AAA batteries (instead of those annoying CR232 discs) is icing on the cake. They advertise the two AAA's lasting a couple years, but we'll see. The auto off feature is great too. I'm very happy with Wixey's gauges.

I have a Jet jointer/planer. I added this device to the planer. It was easy to install and it is dead-on accurate. The display tilts for easy reading and shuts off automatically to save battery. I use the machines scale until I get close to the dimension I want and then I switch to the Wixey. I have several Wixey readouts, they are a good company to work with as they stand behind their product and customer service is excellent.

The scale on my Grizzly 15" spiral head planer is low and difficult to read without squatting down. This allowed me to put the readout up and angled for easy readability. The instructions for mounting on a moving head was not the most desirable. I did find a way to mount using some existing holes and only had to drill a couple of holes It took about 2 hours to install and 15 minutes to calibrate the first time. Is it worth the money? Definitely. One problem with using the digital inch readout is that I find myself trying to be to precise.

Pros:
Readout in decimal inches, fractions and millimeters.
Reasonably easy to calibrate.
Readout is remotely located. I like this feature the best. This is also the reason for the 4th star.
Regular batteries with auto power off.
Cons:
If you move the cutter head before turning the device on you lose your calibration.
When you turn it on and off I get variations in the readout even though the cutter head has not been moved. Near as I can tell this is from the lack of real stiffness in the scale assembly or the engagement tabs not being really flat causing the magnetic to engage at different heights. The cable also has to be secured so it does not cause the scale assembly to flex during head movement.

After recieving my planer readout I couldn't get it to operate properly, it seemed to be scaling backwards. After only one email to Wixey I promptly rec'd a reply with suggestions. Within two hours I rec'd a follow up email to check on my progress. At the end of the day I had it working and calibrated thanks to the quick response from Wixey. I would advise anyone looking for this type of unit to go with Wixey for the quality and customer service.
