Book Description

1995
This state-of-the-art CD-ROM marks a revolution in the presentation of ethnographic materials. For the first time, researchers have access to three recording technologies--video, the written word, and Labanotation--in an exciting, interactive format. The videotape performances analyzed in Do You See What I Mean? are presented in full on this CD, together with complete Labanotation texts and written Nakota texts with English translations. The interactive format enables the user to switch between different segments as desired--one can choose to watch an entire performance, read an entire text, or examine a story in detail. For example, calling up "Examine Story" brings to the screen a video clip with corresponding Labanotation and Nakota/English transcriptions for comparison, one sentence or phrase at a time. In addition, further ethnographic information--such as comments by the storytellers and their relatives--can be retrieved by clicking on any underlined word. The CD will run on any Macintosh Level LC (System 7) or higher class computer with a CD-ROM drive. It contains a help document that teaches how to use the program effectively. Sufficient information about Labanotation (a script for writing body movement) also allows those unfamiliar with it to begin reading the movement texts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn more about American Indian oral traditions, March 22, 2000

This review is from: Wiyuta: Assiniboine Storytelling with Signs A CD-Rom (CD-ROM)
I am a student at UCLA, and this CD ROM is part of the American Indian Studies department. I used it to help me in my studies of American Indian oral traditions. There are 3 stories that can be viewed... performed by Wiyuta Indians. You can watch them like a movie, in the native language and in Plains sign speak. You can also read the story in a text format in english, or in the native language. And break down each part of the stories, to better understand how the sign speak correlates with the spoken word. Very helpful. I recommend this to anyone that would like a better appreciation of an American Indian culture.
