Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The Wall Wizard is a precision stud finder. The Wall Wizards precisely locates studs inside of walls by locating the screws that holds dry wall onto studs. Unlike other stud sensors on the market, Wall Wizards are precision metal detectors. Wall Wizards accuratley detect screws or nails that are used in holding the dry wall on to walls. Other stud sensors work (or don't work) by measuring the volume and mass of the wall to locate a stud. They are inconsistent in locating studs because the volume and mass of a wall may change due to dampness, patchwork or many other variables in wall construction. Wall Wizards are consistently accurate because they simply locate the screws that hold the dry wall onto walls.Wall Wizards pinpoint the studs exact location, no measuring, guessing, knocking or drilling holes into walls. There's simply no better stud finder made. And, there's more! The Wall Wizard is also a AC/DC voltage tester. It will tell you if an electrical plug has active current running through it, and if wiring has shorts or "cuts" in it's insulation. The Wall Wizard I also tests DC batteries, and can indicate small amounts of static electricity for testing electronic items such as circuit boards.

I decided to try this product because of its single positive review and low price. I soon learned it was a mistake. The unit requires a 9V battery, which is not included or listed on the packaging (as I recall). Anyway, you're supposed to turn it on, hold the long, flat side against the wall, and move it around to listen for beeps. However, right from the outset it just emits a loud, unending beep, so you have to adjust the sensitivity.... With a small flathead screwdriver. Why they did not just go with a proper dial is beyond me. Even then, my unit would detect a stud and then just go into the unending tone until I adjusted the sensitivity again. Turning it on and off did not help. Manually adjusting the sensitivity with a screwdriver each time you find a stud is not much fun, I can tell you.

After a while I got tired of this and just borrowed a regular stud finder from a friend. What do you know, the borrowed unit worked fine immediately, required no manual calibration, and made no unpleasant sounds. So yeah, spend a few dollars more and get a decent stud finder instead of this unit.

Nice little device. I got this to find floor joists, and it works well even through carpet. The "tuning" is a little sensitive, if you don't find any nails/screws the first time you might have to re-adjust the sensitivity and try again. This worked well for my application, and is certainly better than using one of the other stud finders.
