Product Description

Amazon.com Review

If you're tired of damaging saw blades or drill bits on hidden nails, screws, and staples in walls, concrete slabs (rebar), or recycled wood, you'll want to add a Little Wizard metal detector to your toolbox. Similar to a stud locator (but more powerful and calibrated to locate metal), the Little Wizard can pinpoint the exact location of metal buried up to 2 inches deep. It's easy to use, weighs very little (just 5.7 ounces), and is small enough to fit in even the tightest spaces. --Carl Thress

Product Description

This precision hand-held metal detector can prevent costly damage to blades, planers, cutter heads, and jointers by detecting nails, screws, staples, or other metal objects in wood. It's perfect for scanning recycled wood as well as for locating wood studs inside of walls. The Little Wizard is lightweight, rugged, and easy to operate. Indicators include a speaker and LED red lights. To operate, simply adjust the dial on the Little Wizard until the tone signal stops, position and move in a circular motion. A continuous tone and light will let you know when you're directly above any metal object. Requires one 9 volt battery. High impact plastic case.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful tool, very helpful company, March 21, 2002

I tried this metal detector with a little skepticism, since it was so cheap. The people at Wizard were very helpful and friendly when I called with a question about fine tuning it. It works like a charm, and paid for itself already, finding a broken off brass screw in a board I was about to plane. It looked like an empty screw hole, but the metal detector said otherwise. A great product, and you can't beat the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little tool for the money, December 5, 2001

I did not have high expectations for this relatively inexpensive metal detector (I paid more for a toy one for my son last Christmas). But it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. I tried it on a pallet from my bandsaw shipment and it easily found all the nails in it. I also had no problems finding countersunk brads in a bookcase that I built. I then put a 3/4" pine board over a smattering of brads on a worktable and this little gadget found them with no problem. I suspect it probabaly won't be able to detect a brad more than an inch deep. But unless you are looking for well-hidden nails in big beams, this is a nice tool to have for general usage.

This small metal detector works surprisingly well for such an inexpensive tool. I used it to find nails in some pine boards salvaged from the ceiling of a century-old house. It managed to detect the 2 or 3 nails that I didn't see (and likely would have missed entirely). Bear in mind that you often have to scan the board from more than one direction to detect the nails and this small model isn't likely to find anything in lumber that's very thick (much over one inch). The larger model is probably more sensitive and easier to use, but if you buy this one, you're still won't be throwing your money away.
