5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful tool, very helpful company
I tried this metal detector with a little skepticism, since it was so cheap. The people at Wizard were very helpful and friendly when I called with a question about fine tuning it. It works like a charm, and paid for itself already, finding a broken off brass screw in a board I was about to plane. It looked like an empty screw hole, but the metal detector said otherwise...

2.0 out of 5 stars Finds large screws/nails in wood but not small ones
Tested it out on an 8' long old birch-top workbench. Unit found the screws holding 3/4" top to the frame. It also found most of the visible nails that had been pounded into the top over the years. The key word is "most". It could not find a finishing nail embedded in the top corner of the front edge of the top. I could see the nail with the naked eye but this unit...

A great product, and you can't beat the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little tool for the money, December 5, 2001

I did not have high expectations for this relatively inexpensive metal detector (I paid more for a toy one for my son last Christmas). But it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. I tried it on a pallet from my bandsaw shipment and it easily found all the nails in it. I also had no problems finding countersunk brads in a bookcase that I built. I then put a 3/4" pine board over a smattering of brads on a worktable and this little gadget found them with no problem. I suspect it probabaly won't be able to detect a brad more than an inch deep. But unless you are looking for well-hidden nails in big beams, this is a nice tool to have for general usage.

This small metal detector works surprisingly well for such an inexpensive tool. I used it to find nails in some pine boards salvaged from the ceiling of a century-old house. It managed to detect the 2 or 3 nails that I didn't see (and likely would have missed entirely). Bear in mind that you often have to scan the board from more than one direction to detect the nails and this small model isn't likely to find anything in lumber that's very thick (much over one inch). The larger model is probably more sensitive and easier to use, but if you buy this one, you're still won't be throwing your money away.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little tool..., November 21, 2004

I was given this as a gift. I do a lot of resaw on my bandsaw, mostly chunks of hardwood and fruit woods I acquire in the round. It's amazing the amount of nails, wire staples, bullets, etc you can find in this type of wood. I was fairly impressed with the depth range. Though some reviewer's have said this will only read to an inch, I have found metal screws at a 3 inch depth in a piece of alder. The tree had grown up and around them, saved a good bandsaw blade on that one.

My one and only complaint is tone volume, could be a little louder for us "old" guys, whose hearing isn't top notch. That being said, this is a great little tool and a nice addition to my shop. I use it a lot, and recommend it highly.

At first, I thought this was more of a toy than tool... but today, it located a bolt buried three inches down in a 12x12.... before I put the saw into it.... thanks!.... it is a little delicate looking, and the beep is pretty weak for most construction sites.... otherwise, a good tool.

I've had this tool for about 3 months, and used it on one major project, recovering valuable wood from some old upholstered chairs.

In short, it works well, even better than I expected for such an inexpensive device. Used according to the directions it finds nails easily, and if your thorough, will even find skinny little upholstery staples.

The device seems well made, I expect it will last a long time.

I estimate it's already paid for itself in a single project when I compare it's cost to that of planer, router and saw blades that would otherwise have been damaged.

If you work with reclaimed wood you probably need one of these (or the more expensive model if you do lot's of reclaimation).

4.0 out of 5 stars A good value, November 8, 2007

I've been very pleased with the performance of this item. After taking apart an old deck, I wanted to re-use the lumber. I knew I'd have to use some kind of metal locator, or risk the blades on my saw, planer, etc. I didn't really want to spend a hundred dollars on a metal detector, so I was glad to see this modestly priced version. It does a great job of locating nails and nail fragments in 2X6 lumber. It penetrates well. I had to lift boards up when I scanned past the metal sawhorses I had placed the wood on. There are two minor flaws to the product worth mentioning. First, the head on the detector is only about three inches wide. So you have to make a fair number of passes if you're scanning wide boards. Secondly, the sensitivity control (a dial switch) is on the side of the wand, and it's easy to mistakenly re-adjust it while engaged in normal use. That could be a real problem if you inadvertently turned the sensitivity too low and missed some embedded metal. Still, the product works well, and is much less expensive than similar products. Finally, the delivery was very quick. I ordered the product and requested normal shipping. Two days later it was at my doorstep.

5.0 out of 5 stars Metal Detector's Little Friend!, March 25, 2011

This little guy makes a great pin-pointer. I am a novice metal detector so I couldn't imagine spending hundreds for a pin-pointer, so I bought one of these. What a great investment! This thing is super helpful and accurate. Well worth the price. Accurate and light, easy to carry with me when I go out into a field or woods. Most importantly this shaves so much time off the digging process and makes the hunt that much more enjoyable. Great little pin-pointer! I would make one adjustment, cover the seem on the front with black electrical tape to keep the dirt out and keeps the pin-pointer accurate.

I was going to return it but figured for $20 I'd keep it and use it to at least find bigger metallic objects.
