4.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable read February 2, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you're a fan of wizards, fantasy, and spellcraft, this is a thoroughly enjoyable and quick read. Short stories, I think, are probably the most challenging type of fiction, not least to develop a sense of character, place, and plot in such a brief span. Mr. Bayard does this quite well.

And while it has the typical themes of many in the fantasy genre, Mr. Bayard puts a unique twist on several ideas. The method by which a wizard is summoned is unique and, in my mind, really sets the tone for the rest of the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Half of wizardry is showmanship February 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What an enjoyable read! Fantasy is written by many but few do it well. It takes keen eye (and pen) to tell a story like this without getting mired in unnecessary detail too early. In a short story, it is incredibly difficult. Mr. Bayard lets the world unfurl for the reader at the perfect pace.
Looking forward to more...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great first novella March 12, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a great quick read. The story moves briskly with a few interesting characters through a magical world, with rules and limits that are only hinted at. I definitely finished and wanted to read more about the characters and the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars good read for the Tweens or Tweens at heart March 6, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story line is simple, but interesting, the magic simple but at the same time unique, the characters straight out of a B movie matinee all John Wayne isk, but it got me through most of an hour on an exercise bike and the had enough interest for me to finish it at lunch the next day

5.0 out of 5 stars Captures the imagination and promises more March 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I read this novella a couple of weeks ago and for some reason am only now getting to writing my review which is perhaps a strange way to start but on reflection helps me make the point that it is still strong in my memory.

Bayard did a very good job of giving us a glimpse into this universe, letting us know that we do not know all of the rules and let a story unfold in a reasonable way. The efficient use of language packed a great deal of story into an exciting novella that hopefully promises a lot more from the ‘Half Wise’ series.

This is a fantasy novella that packs a lot into a small space and well worth a read by fans of that genre.

Lots of cool plot and characterization going on in this book, and funny dialogue to boot. When I finished, I was a little sad it was over and anxious for the next one.
