5.0 out of 5 stars Violent J tells a story that's hard to forget..., June 16, 2004
By
This review is from: Wizard of the Hood (Audio CD)
When i first thought about buying this CD i knew nothing about it except that it was Violent J's solo EP & that it was a twisted tale of The Wizard of Oz. My first listen to this album told me that it was amazing! Everything about it makes me want to hear more. Every track is another part of the story (well, except for the bonus tracks) and the story is one you'll never forget. The only way i can describe this album is through a track-by-track review which is shown below:

1.) Intro - A short intro in which J is smoking & informs the listeners that he's gonna tell them a story.

2.) Let It Rain (9/10) - Nice way to start out the story. Violent J is simply chillin' in Detroit, waiting on some of the local junkies to come around. I don't want to give away too much of the story but let's just say by the end of this track J's definitely not in Detroit anymore.

3.) Yellow Brick Alleyway (10/10) - Wow this track is crazy! Upon his arrival in Fantasy *** Fantasy Land J discovers he's now a hero and is on his way to meet the Wizard of the Hood.

4.) Homies 2 Smoke With (10/10) - This is a really nice slower song. J and The Scarecrow (played by Monoxide Child) trade some verses about smokin & by the end of this track they're both on their way to the Wizard.

5.) Thug Whillin' (9/10) - This track is WAY more edgier than the previous one, it contains alot more metal sounding effects in the background. In this part of the story, J & Scarecrow are ambushed by Tin Tizzle (aka Jamie Madrox) and once again, by the end, are all on the way to the good Wiz.

6.) Horrible Horrifying (9/10) - A darker sounding track. J, Scarecrow & Tin Tizzle head through a dark forest on their way & are attacked by the Lion (voiced by Blaze Ya Dead Homie). After a while, though, all four are headed further towards the Wizard Of The hood.

7.) What U Thinkin' (8/10) - A slowed-down type of track. J, Scarecrow, Tin Tizzle & The Lion get lost in a big field of mushrooms & reflect on why they're headed to the Wizard anyway. Nice collabo track.

8.) Shiny Diamonds (10/10) - This track is a Violent J solo & is amazing! The acoustic parts of the track help it out alot so does J's slow rhyming. Also, props to J for singing like Micheal Jackson ("without the little boys & the plastic nose")!

9.) The Wizard's Palace (10/10) - Pretty short track but very good as its the end of the great adventure. After a short trip through the palace (meeting the Gate Keeper aka Anybody Killa) all four of the crew end up meeting the Wizard himself (none other than Shaggy 2 Dope) & get all of their wishes by way of the magic smoke.

10.) Axes Swingin' (7/10) - My personal least favorite on the album. Its Ok but nothing special. This could've been left off of the disc.

11.) Multiply Myselves (10/10) - WOW this track is great. J explains all of his personalities & it has a great beat behind it. I never knew J had so many alter egos!

12.) My Shine (9/10) - Pretty good smooth track. Basically J talkin about his hometown & how he loves being famous. Good reflective-type track.

13.) Bloody ***** (9/10) - Really dark track for Violent J but good nonetheless. Amazing type of storytelling here, this should have been put before "My Shine".

Overall, this is an amazing experience that all should give a listen to.

4.0 out of 5 stars Who Thought Oz Was Like This?, August 24, 2003
This review is from: Wizard of the Hood (Audio CD)
This cd is everything it claims to be. That is, it's definately aimed toward the pot-smoking community. Being an avid non-smoker(marijuana anyway), I still enjoyed this record. Violent J takes the place of the Dorothy character from the origina Wizard of Oz book, Monoxide Child from Twiztid plays the Scarecrow, Jamie Madrox from Twiztid plays the Tin Man(or Tin-Tizzy as he refers to himself), Blaze Ya Dead Homie plays the Lion, while Shaggy 2 Dope plays the Wizard. The story unfolds almost like a book, each song another chapter into the twiztid world of Oz. If you enjoy any music put out by Psychopathic Records, this is for you. If your not interested in walking into the "fantasy-ass-fantasyland" that is Wizard of The Hood, keep on trucking down the yellowbrick alleyway.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not that great., February 21, 2006
This review is from: Wizard of the Hood (Audio CD)
The story on this is great and some of the songs are kinda catchy, but this album just falls flat to me. I've never been a fan of Mike P. and his production just brings this whole thing down. Like I said, some of the songs are kinda catchy, but other than the first song, none of them are actually good. Shaggy, Twiztid and Blaze make some good guest appearance's as spin offs of the classic Wizard of Oz characters. Shaggy's new solo is much better, so I suggest picking that up as oppossed to this.
