3.0 out of 5 stars You Decide....
I got this CD because I love "The Wizard of Oz". When I actually listened to it, it was pretty good (3 stars), but then again nothing can compare with the 1939 MGM classic. Be prepared though, this isn't exactly the same as the 1939 movie. It has Jewel singing "Over The Rainbow" and the first couple of times that you listen to it, you might say...

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb performances by Jewel and Nathan Lane, December 8, 1998

I've heard Nathan Lane's performance 50 times and still laugh at his superb portrayal of the lion. This guy is tops. Jewel's voice and modern slant to Somewhere Over the Rainbow is a must hear. You will not find a better source of entertainment. This soundtrack has it all. Hearing 'The Jitterbug' makes me wonder why this jazzy little tune was left out of the original motion picture.

5.0 out of 5 stars To me, homage to the original..for a great cause, July 5, 2001
This review is from: The Wizard Of Oz In Concert: A Benefit Performance For The Children's Defense Fund (1996 Lincoln Center Cast) (Audio CD)
Granted, there is no way any new production of "The Wizard of Oz" can compare to the 1939 film-not even "The Wiz" came close. But when these artists came together for a good cause, The Children's Defense Fund, all I could think of was what a wonderful homage to the original cast and Harold Arlen's music. Perhaps on CD one loses this feeling. But watching the concert, that is available on video, you can see that their hearts are in the right place.

Nathan Lane celebrates Bert Lahr's memory in his performance as the Cowardly Lion. He is an absolute joy.

On the video, there are interviews with some of the artists...and Jackson Browne puts it best. He was in awe of the audience, mostly baby boomers, with their children on their laps, clapping, with fists in the air, like the "Who" concerts in the 70's when Roger Daltrey appears on stage as the Tin Man, incorporating some of the "old moves" into the character. IMHO, this is a video and CD worth buying and sharing with a new generation.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS CD!, June 21, 2003

This review is from: The Wizard Of Oz In Concert: A Benefit Performance For The Children's Defense Fund (1996 Lincoln Center Cast) (Audio CD)
I got this CD as a present from my mom for getting good grade's on my report card, so she ordered it for me. After waiting 5 day's, I finally got the CD. When I listened to it, I knew what to expect b/c I have The Wizard of Oz in Concert on video. I LOVED THIS CD!! Jewel's acting, and 2 renditions of "Over the Rainbow" and "The Jitterbug" will blow you away! She was pefect as Dorothy. Jackson Browne as the Scarecrow, Natalie Cole as Glinda the Good Witch, Debra Winger as the Wicked Witch, and Roger Daltrey as the Tin Man were excellent too. And Nathan Lane was HILARIOUS as the Cowardly Lion This CD is a must buy for Oz fans and Jewel fans! :)

Our local Drama group is performing the "Wizard of Oz (RSC)" for our summer production and as Musical Director I thought I'd get as many different versions of each song as possible. Most of the RSC songs do not appear in the film version so i thought i'd add this cd to my collection. All the songs have been modernised without loseing their still traditional feel. The cd is worth buying alone for Roger Daltreys' (The Who) version of "If I Only had a Heart". All star cast inc Natalie cole (miss you like crazy and pink cadillac) and Nathan Lane ( voice of "snowbell" in Stuart Little) and a load more older names that your parents will recognise more.
a must buy

This recording has taken a fresh approach to some really timeless and wonderful music. Nathan Lane is superb as the Lion, and Roger Daltrey makes a great Tinman, what about Jackson Brown as the Scarecrow, and Jewel as Dorothy. Take it from an OZ fanatic--this recording is wonderful!

Loved it - a refreshing, modern update of the classic Oz. The casting choices were perfect right down to the Harlem Boy's Choir member as Toto. Try it!

Once you get over that though, it is pretty good. By the way, they have this on video, if you didn't get to see it on VH1. (with LOTS of commercials)
