4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Cool
A good compilation of spells. I like the tables in the front of this (the first) book. I understand this is not meant to be a rule book, but some help on where to find rules on chronomancers would be nice, since there are a fair number of spells for them in here. Recommend getting 1st and 4th books before obtaining rest so that you get the tables and index.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of every kind of spell imaginable!!, August 22, 1998

This review is from: Wizard's Spell Compendium, Vol. 1 (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons) (Paperback)
This book contains spells used by the Drow, Alhoon (undead illithids), elven high magic, paramanders (a kind of paladin-mage), even the Red Wizards of Thay, and then some!! It is not only useful for rewarding mages with cool new spells, it also gives a pretty clear idea of the characteristics of magic in the different settings. Can't get any spells better than these!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource For The Wizard, May 13, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Wizard's Spell Compendium, Vol. 1 (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons) (Paperback)
This book contains ALL of the spells to date in the AD & D game. That's all of them, modules, Tome of Majic, PHB, etc. A must have for the advanced or beginning Wizard. It introduces new schools of majic including elemental maji. Volume One only covers A thru D or E (alphabetically) spells. I'm going to snatch the next volumes as they are out, you should too

5.0 out of 5 stars Book One of Four Books of Arcane MAGIC +++, August 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Wizard's Spell Compendium, Vol. 1 (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons) (Paperback)
This is BOOK ONE [of a set of four books] on Arcane MAGIC for AD&D and related games.

This four-volumn set is a MAGICAL Wizard's Spell Compendium of almost all Arcane Spells ever available for AD&D -- including ones teleported from earliest old basic D&D to later AD&D 2.5. Just about all Arcane Spells good for AD&D [to just before D&D 3.0] have been compiled in a fine-tuned uniform format -- arranged alphabetically -- but with lots of good spell-data in special charts in the start of book one and ending of book four to supplement the alphabetical format. The various Arcane Spells have been teleported from early older D&D manuals and modules to later AD&D manuals and modules -- including ones from the various world-settings such as Mystara, Greyhawk, Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, Dark Sun and Ravenloft -- and other less-well-known worlds. The magically artistic and written presentation from cover-to-cover completes the deep enchantment from ancient elder D&D and AD&D eras +++

5.0 out of 5 stars The cream of the crop., May 10, 1999
By A Customer
Anyone who thinks that this book is redundant, or just repeats spells, is insane. Thousands of spells were collected from every adventure, and magazine to make this the most complete listing of spells avalible. Many have also been updated to work with AD&D rules.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the basic building block of all magic users in AD&D, March 11, 1998
By A Customer
An encyclopedia of magical knowledge is at your fingertips when you open this glorious book of EVERY SINGLE SPELL. TSR scrounged spells from tome of magic, player's handbook, complete wizard handbook etc. If you ever want to be a master in the fine art of magic, all you'll ever need is in here. By the way since I started using this I have yet to lose.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful but unbalanced, June 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Wizard's Spell Compendium, Vol. 1 (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons) (Paperback)
The breakdown of the spells into various groups helps players check spells fast.

But beware, play balance of the spells are poorly done for nearly all spells cast by Elminster, Khelbun, Seven sisters and the major characters in FR.

The rest are alright execpt for some balantly munchkin ones (unidirectional wall of force??). Discretion required.
