This review is from: Wizard's Quest Bookcase Game (Toy)
Wizard's Quest is a nearly 30 year old board game that is still as fun it ever was. Set on the mystical island of Marnon two to six warlords battle for supremacy to become the undisputed ruler of Marnon. A wizard, called Peacemaker, has created a quest to determine who will become the ruler. Each warlord was given three treasures that were subsequently hidden by the rival warlords that must be procured. The first warlord to obtain all three will become the ruler of Marnon. The map is a marvelous piece of artwork that has many subtleties that keep the eye entertained throughout the entire course of the game. There are six regions with six territories each as well as eight castle squares for a total of 44 spaces. Each of the 36 territories are named, many of which have associated artwork related to its name. There is even a Great Tunnel that connects two different squares that are on opposite ends of the map. Wizard's Quest is unique in a number of ways that make it truly exceptional. First, there are the natives of Marnon called orcs (semi intelligent pig-like goblins) who live on the island and have a very interesting roll as spoilers. Their actions and production are determined by the rules and the dice, and when they frenzy they can create a very interesting dynamic. Also there is a Dragon who attacks a random square every turn eating up to six men. Then there is Peacemaker himself who "prospers" whoever controls the square he chooses to visit, as well as prevents any attack within the region he visits. Combat is simple enough to be manageable, yet sophisticated enough to allow for real strategy. There are other minutia that I won't go into, but the game is flexible enough to be entertaining both a family or a group of avid gamers. I strongly recommend this game to those who like having a good time!
