The ReadingPen TS works as specified.

I purchased this device for someone who has a reading disability. Their comprehension and retention is much better when something has been first read to them. After the first reading, they often can re-read text without difficulty.

What isn't immediately obvious from the product description/technical specifications is that you can only scan one line of text at a time. Therefore, if you're needing an entire page or paragraph read, you'll have to pause after each line and listen to that line being read before moving to the next line. This makes it a very slow and tedious process. I returned it because of this limitation.

The reading voice is a standard computer type voice. Nothing earth shattering but, once you get used to the voice, you can hear the words fairly easily. For me, this is acceptable since it pretty much represents the current technology capabilities of most all retail devices that read "text".

With regular frequency, I did find that a scanned line got completely messed up and had to be re-scanned. You have to be very steady and smooth when scanning a line.

We didn't look much into the other capabilities (i.e. translation, games, dictionary, etc...) since that wasn't the primary purpose for buying the device.

It didn't have any problems with different font sizes/styles.

I definitely could see where the pen could be of great use to someone with greater needs.

IMPORTANT NOTE: No problems with returning the ReadingPen and folks at J&R (vendor) were very helpful with the return.

Our son is Autistic but high function and now going to Community College. The device actually helps him obsorb the information better and gives him two forms of intake, visual and sound so that he can decipher the information much more effectively. Recommend this to anyone who has a learning disability or attention deficient disorder child or adult. It does work if used properly.

More options than expected. Great tool for reading unknown single words. Easy to use but need good fine motor skills and takes a little practice for the younger user. Recommend!

I bought this item for my nephew who has difficulty in learning but he understands everything. This is marvelous item as now he can read everything and it's so simple to use, does not require any training etc.I wish if it can read Indian language Hindi, it will have enormous scope in India where people are not educated but now have money power and this will help them read anything.Simply put pen on words and you can listen so clearly each and evrything.

my grand daughter has a learning disability her main problem is that she can not read well but she can hear and understand, i was going to buy the table model translator but they were expensive and she could only use at home not school. i purchased this model to try and it worked out great she uses it by herself she is 12. i looked on web on how to use but it was a little more than i could handle but she did. i bought the one with more features they have a cheaper one but i thought she could grow into it. the school lets her use it in class she has a disability title 5 something,
i thank the inventors for giving my grand daughter a chance at a normal life

I was really excited to try this product for my dyslexic so as it will save him much frustration when trying to read test at school as he could use it to "read" the words he could not. Unfortunately the technology is not there and it makes as many "mistakes" as he does reading. It also requires scanning from right to left which is really confusing. Looking forward to the next generation of this product.

This product is a waste of money. It's screen is dark with small text., but the most frustrating part is it's imaccuaracy. The pen is advertised as being useful to children with learning disabilities as a tool to improve reading. It is slow to calculate the scanned line, then the auditory output on material scanned is flawed by the inaccuracy. It rarely read my son's high school text book with any sort of correctness. It sounded like a tool that could benefit my Special needs son, but it did not deliver.
