Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The latest from Julie Doiron offers a mix of songs that celebrate the family life now central to this thirtysomething songwriter. Also, as if in testament to time passing and the ties that ultimately bind us to one another, Woke Myself Up finds her reunited with former bandmate Rick White. The two led the pivotal Canadian band Eric's Trip in the early '90s, and he not only signs on here as producer, but also plays bass and a few other instruments throughout. As always, the directness of Doiron's writing and performing is subtly compelling. There's a tidy brevity to the songs and the set (the 11 numbers clock in at under 30 minutes, but it's just right), with arrangement flourishes all the more powerful when they step to the fore. There are surprises, but they're always organically tied to the life of the song. When "Yer Kids" breaks open into an edgy rocker at its midpoint, it positively dazzles. --David Greenberger

Product Description
Julie is recognized around the globe as one of the leading ladies in independent music. This is her first album of new material since 2004's "Goodnight Nobody", featuring contributions from the original Eric's Trip line-up, and it's an album of intensely vulnerable and emotionally raw tone. Look for her on tour in the US and Europe with Herman Dune (Astralwerks/Virgin) in February.

4.0 out of 5 stars Julie Doiron Wakes Herself UP, August 9, 2007
Few indie rock ladies have earned the right to be called a Grand Dame. Julie is on her way to becoming one of the best indie has to offer. Former bass player for Eric's Trip (Canadian Indie band), this cd finds Julie Doiron returning with her former band to back her solo effort. There is an enhanced video of `Me and My Friend' if the cd is played on a computer.

There are blended slightly askew overlapping vocals upon vocals that tie up at the end of the verses. There are wispy guitar works that vibrate and hiss with a quiet urgency. Fans of Happy Rhodes or Cat Power would definitely enjoy this excellent piece of indie showwomanship. Doiron is a renaissance woman of sorts: she can write, she's a professional photographer, and has played on several indie releases including Tragically Hip cds.

It's a bit grittier than Natalie Merchant, but the vocals have similar textures and tones. Not over produced, but not quite lo-fi, there is some hiss and unintentional echo that only adds to the subdued effort that Doiron easily manages to convey. I strongly suggest that you give this cd a listen. If you can appreciate the guitar twists of Vic Chesnutt, you will enjoy the minimalist approach Doiron uses.
