Book Description

July 2000
Ken Campbell's Millennium project idea is to teach a language so simple that the whole world's population could learn it in only a few days and thereafter we would all be able to communicate with ease. In 1998 Campbell locates such a language on a distant South Pacific island - though which one remains a little unclear - visits the island, and learns the lingo. He then instantly translates the whole of Macbeth into his speech and organizes the locals to perform it. This is Ken Campbell's first CD release and your chance really to learn a language in a weekend!

This review is from: Wol Wantok: A Pidgeon English Version of Macbeth (King Mob Spoken Word CDs) (Audio CD)
This CD includes various tracks about the author's personal discovery of Bislama, or Pidgin English, and his attempts o get Macbeth translated into that language, which he did and later had performed.

The language is a creole Englaish called Bislama, spoken in the island nation of Vanuatu. The author mistakenly spells it Pigeon, like the bird, instead of pidgin, which is the name for a trade langauge created as a mutual means of communication between speakers of various tongues. It becomes a creole when it is picked up as a first language. Of course, that's an incredibly simplistic description, and you can find many books on creoles and pidgins on Amazon. You can also find a grammar of Bislama by Terry Crowley.

Enjoy the CD, but beware. If you have no interest in crazy languages or Oceania, don't get it. But if the incredible diversity of this world interest you, if you're studying Bislama to go to Vanuatu, or just have a curious mind, it's fun!
