This CD includes various tracks about the author's personal discovery of Bislama, or Pidgin English,and his attempts o get Macbeth translated into that language, which he did and later had performed.The language is a creole Englaish called Bislama, spoken in the island nation of Vanuatu. The author mistakenly spells it Pigeon, like the bird, instead of pidgin, which is the name for a trade langauge created as a mutual means of communication between speakers of various tongues. It becomes a creole when it is picked up as a first language. Of course, that's an incredibly simplistic description, and you can find many books on creoles and pidgins on Amazon. You can also find a grammar of Bislama by Terry Crowley. Enjoy the CD, but beware. If you have no interest in crazy languages or Oceania, don't get it. But if the incredible diversity of this world interest you, if you're studying Bislama to go to Vanuatu, or just have a curious mind, it's fun! |
