Book Description

Wolf April 4, 2006
In Through Wolf's Eyes, Jane Lindskold introduced Firekeeper, the young girl raised by intelligent, language-using wolves. Abducted back into human society, Firekeeper found that, in the world of deadly human political intrigues, her training as a pack animal served her well.

Later, in Wolf Captured, Firekeeper and her lupine companion Blind Seer found themselves kidnapped and dragged overseas, to the unfamiliar land of Liglimon, where humans have a different relationship to intelligent animals. Now, still in Liglimon, Firekeeper and Blind Seer respond to a request for assistance from Truth, the soothsayer-jaguar.

Then, while helping Truth, Firekeeper and her companion come across evidence of elaborate investigations into kinds of ancient magics taboo in Liglimoshti culture. It appears more people in Liglimon are willing to flout this taboo than anyone cares to admit, and Firekeeper and Blind Seer decide their duty is to find out more.

But Truth knows more than she's telling. She can see and trace future timelines for particular individuals, which in the past has led her into madness. Since then, the Voice that guided her out of that madness has continued to speak to her, and it's not her friend.

Eventually Truth realizes that her Voice may well be a person the Liglimoshti call "The Meddler" -- a dangerous trickster figure. But Truth doesn't own up to this until far too late…

Compellingly told, rich with real people and real animals, WOLF HUNTING is the latest and strongest in an increasingly and rewarding sequence of fantasy epics.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In the thrilling fifth installment of Lindskold's Firekeeper fantasy saga, Firekeeper, a human girl raised by a pack of wise wolves, receives a message from Truth, an oracular jaguar, that Firekeeper is the only one who can help her regain her sanity, which was lost in battle in the previous book, Wolf Captured (2004). Firekeeper's wolflike sense of curiosity leads her to accept Truth's challenge, and she soon takes to the road accompanied by, among others, Blind Seer, her faithful wolf companion, and Darian Carter, a native of the land of Liglim. They seek to reunite Truth with her senses and to find out who belongs to the voice Truth is hearing in her head. With a smaller cast of characters and more interaction between animals, this volume is more tightly focussed than earlier entries in the series. The intriguing plot makes for a quick and enjoyable read. (Apr.)

From Booklist

Orphaned and raised by wolves, Firekeeper is at home in the wild as well as closer to her wolf companion, Blind Seer, than she ever could be to a human. Now one of the sentient Wise Beasts requires their help. The jaguar Truth's gift of prophecy has driven her mad and separated her from her spirit, but a voice in her head urges her to bring Firekeeper to open a door and thereby be made whole again. More curious than anything else, Firekeeper and Blind Seer respond to Truth's summons. They discover evidence of possible sorcery and ties to firsthand acquaintances of theirs who have a serious interest in prohibited ancient magic. They agree to find out what evil those people may be up to. Evil may be closer than they think, for Truth, although restored to herself, still hears the voice. As this quest that flirts with tedium continues, Truth becomes ever more convinced that the voice may well belong to the Meddler, who has a reputation for being very dangerous indeed. Paula Luedtke

5.0 out of 5 stars She's done it again, April 5, 2006

Ms. Lindskold continues to write literate, well thought out fantasy. This continuation of the "Firekeeper and Blind Seer" saga proves to be the best yet. Ms. Lindskold refuses to be predictable. Besides the Wolf series she has written enough unrelated books such as "Child of a Rainless Year", to prove the extent of her imagination. An imagination that does not need to construct unbelievable scenarios and long descriptive passages to carry you into her world. The story alone carrys you with it. We are lucky indeed to have such a writer.

With the fifth installment of the "Firekeeper" series, Jane Lindskold continues to uphold her tradition of fine storytelling. In order to understand the full background of the Firekeeper universe, I would recommend reading the rest of the series in order. While there are enough references and history provided to allow the book to stand on its own, readers will certainly benefit from reading the previous four books in this series.

I found that this book in particular set itself apart by introducing a completely new venue and various new subplots. It did deviate somewhat from the previous books in that Lindskold narrowed her focus somewhat, zeroing in more tightly on some key characters. Lindskold is particularly adept at character development, so the tighter focus gives even greater depths to already likable (if not downright charming) characters.

While set in a "sword and sorcery" universe, it is not the typical fantasy novel one would expect. More intellectually and relationship oriented, Lindskold draws the reader in and really endears the reader to her characters, promising a delightful book that is literally impossible to put down at times.

WARNING: May cause drowsiness due to the inability of the reader to put the book down. May also cause post-story depression once the reader finishes the book and is once again returned to real-life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly immersive world, June 12, 2007

I think I liked this as much as book 1. Maybe more because I already knew the main characters. I'm releaved about this, because I really didn't care much for the in-between books.

Still, Jane is one of the better fantasy authors at creating real worlds with believable, fully-fleshed characters. It's 2:30 AM, and I just finished reading -- even though my work will suffer, tomorrow. I really couldn't put it down.
