This review is from: Wolf: Italian Songbook (Italienisches Liederbuch) (Audio CD)
Here are two great Wolf singers caught at their absolute best in terms of interpretation and vocal gleam. Every other set has had to live up to this one--although I must say there have been many good versions of The Italian Songbook. Just a warning to beginners, however. Wolf wrote several dozen miniature songs for this cycle, unlike the full-length lieder he wrote elsewhere, and the format of one exauisite, sophisticated jewel after another can be fatiguing, even irritating. This is a great recording I rarely return to, and then only half a dozen songs at a time.
