Stranded in Alaska! Beck Granger and his anthropologist uncle are on their way to visit Anakat Village, home to one of the native peoples of Alaska, when their tiny plane crashes in the Alaskan wilderness. A tense and exciting struggle for survival with real survival details and gruesome tips!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bear is a machine., November 22, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Another amazing and must read. I started reading and did not stop. If you like this I recommend "Great Outdoor Adventures", Bear is an inspiration and an icon, I look up to him and all he has accomplished. He has given me the drive and fortitude to realize that after a life altering accident you can still push on and strive and overcome anything. I was severely wounded in Fallujah Iraq and was put in a position that my life was going to be different and through Bear and his words and pursuits I realized that with a little will power and wit you can do anything.

Thank you Bear

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book!, October 27, 2008
What first made this book catch my eye is I was already a fan of Bear Grylls from watching his television programs. As a writer he does a very good job of blending story with education.
Beck, the main character of Gold of The Gods, finds himself in many situations where he uses real life survival techniques. The techniques in the book are very much like the ones used by Bear in the show Man Vs. Wild on The Discovery Channel. For that reason I think many of his television fans would also enjoy his book.
The books genre is teenage fiction so older readers may not enjoy it as much as younger ones. As an older reader I would have liked to see the three main characters being a bit older. The three main characters were in their early teens. I also would have liked the book to stay more reality and less fantasy. I thought giving the natives super natural powers was a bit of a stretch and took a little away from the educational value of the book. I did like the underlying message of protecting the environment and the encouragement to enjoy the natural beauty of the world around us the book sends to it's readers.
I was impressed the book had a lenticular central image. When you tilt the book back and forth the boy on the cover appears to move, swinging a stick at you. It is nice they would put that quality into making the book.
I look forward to reading the next book in the series. For readers interested in the survival techniques I would also recommend Bear's book Man Vs. Wild which is also available here on Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read, September 14, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
If you're looking for divine literature, this isn't it. However, it is an interesting story, quite a bit of fun and a nice book to read while relaxing. I bought this for my daughter, who is a huge fan of Bear Grylls, and started reading it just out of curiosity. I found myself staying up late into the night reading it, simply because it is so much fun.

I didn't mind the fantasy aspect, as it seemed to fit with the mystique of the Kogi tribe. The age of the characters worked well enough for the story, although I didn't really get attached to the twins at all. Some of the characters were a little over the top, but I think young teens will find that charming rather than off-putting.

I have to say, I was surprised to find the book so well-written. There were a few problems with the narrative, but nothing that really messed up the flow. Grylls is both a good writer and a good story-teller. A very good read for anyone-- child, teen or adult, who likes the idea of adventure but isn't looking for a long read.
