Format: Hardcover
The Walter J Black edition of this book is relatively rare, but not nearly as rare as the Harper's edition of 1930 which consisted of only 98 pages. This edition has additional short fiction by Zane Grey added--Lightning, a story first published in magazine form about 1910; Rangle River, a "western" set in Austrialia; The Kidnapping of Collie Younger, an unpublished manuscript; and Monty Price's Nightingale, another story first published early in Zane Grey's writing career, but you'll recognize Monty as the burnt out cowboy of The Light of Western Stars; this tale is how he became that way. All in all this is a fine collection of works, and perhaps will be your only chance to obtain the story, The Wolf Tracker, as the only other book publishing of this story can be found in a Belmont Tower paperback, Savage Kingdom, which came out in 1975, and has not been reprinted to my knowledge. So, get this one while you can; it's well worth the price. As to the title story, The Wolf Tracker, it deals with one man's obsession to track down and kill Old Gray a killer wolf destroying ranchers' cattle. It's quite a psychological drama as the mysterious trapper, Brink, chases the wolf for several months before being able to finally kill him. A whole lot of respect is called forth from Brink for the wolf during this time of the pursuit, and the reward money becomes secondary to what drives him in this quest. The Monty Price story is probably the second best of the lot, and was the subject of a paperback printing in 2012 by Wildside Press--24 pages of large dark print, easily readable--a fine representation of this story. Rangle River was published by Five Star Western in a fine hard back collection of short stories under that title in 2001; this book also has The Kidnapping of Collie Younger in it as well.
