Intriguing series, November 27, 2010
This review is from: Spice and Wolf (Amazon Instant Video)
I didn't know what to expect when I started watching this series, but I have been impressed by the plot twists and intrigue. At a high level, Lawrence is a traveling peddler who's dream is to open his own shop. Holo is a wolf harvest deity (wheat is her crop) who has been forsaken by the town she was CCCC and has chosen to return to her homeland. Holo convinces Lawrence to take her with him on his travels and to return her to her homeland. This is the story of their journey.
Some fans of more typical anime may be a little disappointed or bored with this one because it focuses more on economics, trade and the building relationship between Holo and Lawrence instead of the usual 'swords and sorcerers' themes. Working out how someone could invest in a currency that is rumored to be devalued in the near future, and expect to turn a profit, is a bit of a mental exercise, but I found it unexpected and refreshing. Rather than some rival deity or demon serving as the villan, the church (can't have a pagan deity roaming around) and rival trade federations (money DOES make the world go 'round) fill that role.
You really have to pay attention to keep track of what is going on in the larger world of this story, aside from the obvious front story, which is Lawrence's work towards making enough money to settle down and open his own shop. This series isn't really dark and, aside from the oppressive church and fear of rival business coalitions, I actually found it more upbeat and positive than a lot of anime I've watched (no post-nuclear wasteland or end-of-the-world kind of stuff here!). I'm interested in seeing more, and that gets at least another star.
Holo shows up naked in Lawrence's wagon in the first episode, and there are some more "adult" references, but I don't recall anything in the first season that I would consider inappropriate for kids over 10 -- the 'naked' scenes were nothing gratuitous or even detailed like in some anime.
