5.0 out of 5 stars a question of mood, April 21, 2008

This review is from: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Ascanio in Alba / Norberg-Schultz, Pizzolato, Forte, Rancatore, Berchtold, Dantone (Teatro Comunale di Bologna) (DVD)
My first attempt to see this made me cringe and say: here we go again, the director and the others responsible of the visuals have gone amock But at my second try I had to eat my words. The mood created by the staging, the lighting, the costumes and yes even the direction, was just right. The numerous chorus and dancers stayed quite appropriately and unusually nonobtrusive, enhancing the bucholic mood of the serenata . The singing was first rate. I've been Norberg-Schutz admirer for a long time (I first saw her on TV in a city opera marriage, and more recently, live in a concert.)Her Italian diction is great and her voice has extraordinary beauty. Rancatore was a joy to listen and deserved the ovation she got from the audience. Pizzolato's Ascanio was great and the other singers were good too. And what beautiful music!
Finally, this Ascanio was hundred times better than the Salzburg production. The latter has wonderful singers, but pretentious staging and direction.
