5.0 out of 5 stars This is what rock was meant to be!
It is an indisputable fact that real rock has gone by the wayside. Often we hear of a band that has brought it back, only to find out they missed the mark by a long shot.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fine 70's Hard Rock
It is not often these days that you can exactly describe a band but in this case you can: Jack White/Robert Plant singing tributes to Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull and assorted (mostly) 70's hard rock bands.

It's finely played and produced stuff if you don't mind the derivative nature of the material - 'Apple Tree' sounds like it is stolen...

It is an indisputable fact that real rock has gone by the wayside. Often we hear of a band that has brought it back, only to find out they missed the mark by a long shot.

WOLFMOTHER has hit that mark and obliterated it! The crunchy chords; the distortion; the somewhat muffled drums; the vocals out front: it has the ingredients that made their predecessors huge. If you're into that 60's and 70's hard rock sound that was coined by bands like Jo Jo Gunne, Spirit, Spooky Tooth, Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath (with Ozzy), and Pink Floyd, then you will love this album!

"Wolfmother" is the closest thing we have to that feeling our parents got when they first put Led Zeppelin's IV or The Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers on the record player. They were blown away, just as you will be when you get to Wolfmother's "White Unicorn" or "Woman". Powerful, rockin' songs that MUST be played loud!

"Apple Tree" has a bit (just a bit!) of rockabilly/50's pop hiding beneath those power chords -- ingenious!

The song called "Joker and The Thief" is the only place that I can hear The White Stripes connection that some are making. If you like The White Stripes it shouldn't be a stretch to enjoy these guys as well; all without feeling like you're cheating on The White Stripes.

"Witchcraft" has that Jethro Tull sound that has made its way into so many bands' influences. Somehow they manage to once again show their influences without making you go, "Oh that's so Jethro Tull." Okay, maybe some can.

If you are new to Wolfmother, then this album should be the first one you buy. It has most of the songs that are on the singles, and much cooler artwork.

And for crying out loud, go see them live! They are coming to America (from Australia) in 2006!

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget Album of the Year, Try Album of the Past TEN Years!!!!, March 15, 2006
This review is from: Wolfmother (Audio CD)
I will keep it short, this is absolutely one of the best CD's you will ever hear. As the first song is appropriately titled Colossal, this band is about to become Colossal. So if you can, go return your Maroon 5 CD's, your Hanson CD's, and go out and get something that will blow your mind! Even though it is only available as an Import until May 1st, go out and spend the extra money; like you need food, and like you need water, trust me you will need this CD(and no I don't work for the band).

5.0 out of 5 stars An awesome threesome, February 20, 2006
This review is from: Wolfmother (Audio CD)
Ok, I just got back from Perth's Big Day Out. I was there to see Iggy and the Stooges, but some enthusiastic surffer boys commanded me to go see Wolfmother. So I did (Iggy too), and I was blown away!! This disc is classic rock. Crunch power chords mixed with progressive rock concepts and wonderful pop harmonies, and spine tingling vocal acrobatics. Minds Eye starts out sounding like Radiohead, then morphs into some classic power rock from a by-gone era. Dimensions is pure hard rock candy. It is hard to believe this is a threesome generating so much hard core sound. GET IT! You'll love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting cover, interesting band, July 23, 2006

Wolf Mother might be the hardest rocking band to come from Australia since AC/DC. Don't let the Roger Dean-esque cover art fool you, these guys are not proggers. They are more Led Zeppelin than Yes, though the band incorporates just about every British classic rock sound there is. They take many notes from the Led Zep playbook, but you can also hear some Tull influences as well as much from the punk rock period. Wolf Mother's vocalist sounds like Jack White, and his bandmates play like up-tempo Black Sabbath. Imagine the White Stripes with a bassist and more drum fills and you have Wolf Mother. The band only goes slightly acoustic on a couple tracks here, and they are comfortable enough with there sound to throw in a bit of organ and flute-playing. Mostly, though, they rely on loud power chords. Not an album to be played softly. I'll be interested to see what they do on their next album.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's like I fell out of bed, through a lava lamp, and into 1974....can I get this in 8 Track format??, April 27, 2006

The first song "Colossal" sort of reminded me of a mix between Rush, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. From there, the album sort of progresses like an excellent wine. There are hints of Kiss, Blue Oyster Cult, and Cream noted, with powerful overtones of Sabbath. The vocals are great, the guitar work assaults your ears, and the bass/drum lines rattle your skull. You can't help but think of Volkswagen buses, black lights, and the first oil embargo.

One of the bands these guys will be compared to is undoubtedly Jet, just because of their country of origin and style. I liked Jet, but they sounded like a 21st century band doing 70s rock. It was almost like they were trying to sound 70s and forcing it. These guys sound like a 70s band doing 70s rock and freaking sound GREAT doing it. It all flows so well and there doesn't seem to be any effort to make it a certain genre or style. A buddy of mine brought this disc home after heading Down Under for some R&R during the winter, and I had it for about two days before he demanded it back or I was going to lose some tire pressure and a tiny amount of blood. I gave it back, but already preordered the U.S. release (28 clams is a bit high for me) and have to wait until it lands in my greedy hands and drops into my home system for maximum crankage. I'm fully anticipating the neighbors knocking on the door wondering what the hell is going on.

If you even ever thought Black Sabbath, Rush, etc. sounded good at the height of their musical power in the 1970s, GET THIS ALBUM. It's like opening a Christmas present that Mom left up in the attic way back in 1974. If you're too young to remember the 1970s, get it anyway and introduce yourself to the genre through Wolfmother. I hope that this is the beginning of a rebirth in the world of rock....

4.0 out of 5 stars Music's Getting Better., May 4, 2006
This review is from: Wolfmother (Audio CD)
Let's face it new music hasn't been the best for ages. And this is a good album. Listening to it you'll hear a sound that I can describe as Tony Iommi style playing with Robert Plant style vocals. A nice combination, and the album has enough original elements that classic rock fans will be able to listen to it without saying "Hey this is just like ______, What's so great here?"

Thanks to the advent of the internet you can preview this album at myspace.com/wolfmother and just decide for your self.

5.0 out of 5 stars What we've all been waiting for, March 5, 2006
This review is from: Wolfmother (Audio CD)
As a teenager (and musician) who lives for classic rock and thinks rap is a waste of time, I'm always looking out for a new band that will behold the voice of my generation.

Many recent groups have attempted this sort of importance, only leaving their audience to discover, in time, that their music is watered-down, too parodical or mimicking, or just lacking the straight-ahead rock n' roll force of the music of past generations (with the exception of, possibly, the White Stripes and only a few chosen others). Although my love for the Stones is unmatched, we need something new, something for us. Wolfmother is the missing link. They don't sound like Zeppelin or Bad Company or anyone else you've heard, but the attitude they bring is very close. Frighteningly close. They hit the nail of a generation of subconsciously frustrated teens looking for a voice right on the head.

I'd like to say that if you like the howling voice, towering guitar work, and flawless rhythm section of many '70s bands, you'll like Wolfmother. But if you like rock, if you like music, listen to Wolfmother.

Let the album speak for itself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old School Rock n' Roll, June 3, 2006
This review is from: Wolfmother (Audio CD)
Wow. That is the first thing that came out of my mouth when I heard the opening scream on Dimension. From that moment alone, I knew that this was the real deal. I knew this was some serious Rock and Roll. And for me, the return of old school rock is the greatest thing to ever happen. Sure, Jet and the Darkness made attempts at ushering the new era of Classic Rock in, but they couldnt do it. I am sure this will bring it all back.

Lets start talking bout the music. Of course there will be comparisons to Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and even Jethro Tull (on Witchcraft). But there is deffinitly something diffrent. Wolfmother sounds (essentially) like a garage band. A very, very polished garage band. Due to this, there is a hint of White Stripes in the sound.

Wolfmother has a very raw power. If you like good old classic rock, this album is for you. If not, may god have mercy on your soul. HOGEY OUT.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old Rock New Roll, April 30, 2006

Lawden MaCoy (Norton, MA United States) - See all my reviews

Being a fan of new and old rock and roll, i constantly have to listen to my high school friends complain about how todays rock and roll sucks. Since i'm listening to new music, i stumbled on to Wolfmother way before them and passed the word on. Needless to say they were hooked, and often quoted how "rock and roll was back" even though it really never left. This is clearly a work that rock and roll fans of all kinds can celebrate. Great songs, one after another. Mind's Eye, Woman, White Unicorn, Where the Eagle Have Been, Joker and the Theif are all single worthy material. The album starts and doesnt stop. The lead singer says in White Unicorn "we can live in another time, we could live together" and with this record rock and roll fans can, and they can feel happy as hell about it.
