Editorial Reviews

Alpha Wolves of the Heavy Metal project WOLFPAKK are the full blooded musicians Michael Voss (Ex-Casanova, Mad Max) and Mark Sweeney (Ex-Crystal Ball). During a recording session the two rockers made plans for a new Metal project, one of extraordinary kind: the best musicians of the Hard Rock & Metal genre should participate, to create a top-notch album under the aegis of the two leaders. The goal was not only to have the guest musicians on the album but also to feature their respective characteristics and strengths. Thanks to Michael Voss' extensive network gathered over the years as a producer, within a very short time 30 musicians from all over the world joined the project WOLFPAKK. And the results are nothing short of what might be expected from this talent pool. Beware: The WOLFPAKK is after you!!!

Wolfpakk is a new melodic metal project put together by vocalists Mark Sweeney and Michael Voss. That fact alone - that the voices of Crystal Ball and Mad Max/Casanova (respectively) are teaming up - would be reason for most fans of European style melodic metal to take notice. If that doesn't grab your attention though, check out the impressive list of guest vocalists that make an appearance on Wolfpakk's self-titled debut: Paul Di'Anno (ex-Iron Maiden), Tony Martin (ex-Black Sabbath), Jeff Scott Soto (Talisman), Rob Rock (Impelliteri), Mark Boals (Holy Force), Tim "Ripper" Owens (Charred Walls of the Damned), Paul Shortino (King Kobra), Mark Fox (ex-Shakra) and more. On the musician side, bassists Tony Franklin (ex-Blue Murder), Mat Sinner (Primal Fear, Sinner), Neil Murray (ex-Whitesnake) and guitarists Tommy Denander (Paul Stanley), Freddy Scherer (Gotthard), Torsten Koehne (Eden's Curse) all lend a hand.

Well, all the guest appearances in the world won't make up for a lack of quality songwriting, but fortunately Wolfpakk has one of the best songwriters in melodic rock and metal in Michael Voss. And Mark Sweeney is no slouch either. They've put together an album that takes advantage of each other's strengths and really captures that European melodic metal style and energy. It's got a decent sense of heaviness, but melody is the main focus. The guests provide backing vocals and the occasional lead, but Sweeny and Voss handle the lion's share of the vocals, with each taking roughly half of the songs on the album. This isn't a bad thing, as both turn in great performances, but it seems a shame to have this many high-caliber singers and not let them take a greater role.

A trend making the light of day in the metal community and growing larger by the minute is for friends and/or acquaintances in the music scene over a period of time, coming together for a collaboration which usually involves a plethora of guest musicians and vocalists. It began as "metal operas" about ten years ago, thanks to Mr. Tobias Sammet of Edguy and Avantasia; but recently the metal opera theme has fallen away for more personal and introspective themes.

The next collaboration in this trend is Wolfpakk, comprised of ex-Crystal Ball vocalist Mark Sweeney and current Mad Max vocalist Michael Voss. Long-time friends, the pair finally come together after years of planning and timing and the end result is a catchy mix of modern traditional heavy metal with hard rock. Special guests on this debut you ask, well there are plenty of them - 31 guests in all, including 12 vocalists, 10 guitarists, six bassists, two keyboardists and a drummer. Some notable names amongst the 31 include Rob Rock (ex-Impelitteri), Paul Di'Anno (ex-Iron Maiden), Tim Owens (ex-Judas Priest/ex-Iced Earth), Mark Boals (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen), Jeff Scott Soto (ex-Axel Rudi Pell), Tony Martin (ex-Black Sabbath) and Matt Sinner (Sinner/Primal Fear).

Both Sweeney and Voss have written all the lyrics and music, as well as the mixing and production, and have joined label heavyweights AFM for a worldwide release. Knowing what the two musicians have achieved in their careers thus far, it would be expected that this be a damn fine CD... and it is. Catchy melodic metal forged with the harder-edged hard rock that expels some nifty guitar-work the whole way through. Being melodic metal, keyboards are a priority, but not overused like in some melodic metal bands.
