Access Expert Knowledge Wherever You Are
"It's the first step toward a real artificial intelligence." - Gregory Chaitin, IBM emeritus computer scientist

Remember the Star Trek computer? It's finally happening--with Wolfram|Alpha. Building on 25 years of development led by Stephen Wolfram, Wolfram|Alpha has rapidly become the world's definitive source for instant expert knowledge and computation.

Across thousands of domains--with more continually added--Wolfram|Alpha uses its vast collection of algorithms and data to compute answers and generate reports for you.

Parts of Wolfram|Alpha are used in the Apple Siri Assistant; this app gives you access to the full power of the Wolfram|Alpha computational knowledge engine.

Get Answers

With Wolfram|Alpha, discover answers in Mathematics, Statistics & Data Analysis, Physics, Chemistry, Materials, Engineering, Astronomy, Earth Science, Life Sciences, Computational Sciences, Units & Measures, Dates & Times, Weather, Places & Geography, People & History, Sports & Games, Culture & Media, Food & Nutrition, Education, Health & Socioeconomic Data, Money & Finance, Music, Words & Linguistics, Medicine, Colors, Organizations, Transportation, Technological World, and Web & Computer Systems.

Unlike search engines, which suggest page links, Wolfram|Alpha answers inquiries by computing structured data. Voted the Best of What's New Grand Winner by Popular Science in 2009, it is considered a monumental leap forward in knowledge extraction. Wolfram|Alpha's goal is aimed at bringing instantly accessible systematic knowledge to the broadest range of people; regardless of profession or education level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't limit yourself to math with this app! March 23, 2011
None of the other reviewers so far have mentioned the other capabilities of the app, besides its ability to do and explain complicated math. I use this app to look up stocks, populations, random trivia like the odds of poker hands and the birthdays of actors, and calculate the number of calories in my breakfast. It does a ton, and although you can just use the mobile website, the app works well and it's nice to give a couple bucks to the people involved in making this awesome tool. The math/symbols keyboard that pops up is great, too, and makes punching in obscure symbols easy.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most powerful apps out there March 23, 2011
This is one of the very few apps I have actually paid for, and it was very, very much worth it. As other reviewers have stated, it is extremely useful for math, including all of calculus and differential equations! It can be slightly tedious typing the problems in by hand, but as you may well know it sure beats the 30 minutes it would take to solve analytically. It also provides way more info than you would ever want to know about almost every molecular compound and chemical out there. These are two examples out of thousands of uses. As unbelievable as it seems, it really does provide an answer to almost every physical thing.

For a "demo" I highly recommend checking out their website: [...]. The app is literally the exact same thing, except 100% mobile! Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars An answer engine, not just a search engine November 29, 2011
Verified Purchase
I had used Wolfram Alpha before, so when I saw there was an app for my Kindle Fire, I didn't even have to think about it - I downloaded it immediately. According to the developer, the app is an answer-engine that answers factual queries directly by computing the answer from structured data, rather than providing a list of documents or web pages that might contain the answer as a search engine would.

Whatever you call it, it truly works. I haven't seen another app like it for gathering a lot of related information and presenting it in text, tabular, or graphical form. The best way to learn what it can do is to start asking questions. It's certainly not perfect, but I've been amazing at how productive it is.

It's very good at arithmetic and algebra. Type in "5x=10" and you'll get the answer x=2, plus a graph of the function. That's a trivial example, but I've seen examples that were much more complex.

One of the newer features is the ability to show airline flights that are over your location at the moment. Type "overhead flights," and if your mobile device knows your location, it will give you a list of flights and each flight's altitude, distance, and elevation angle. I've tried it, and it appears to be accurate for lower altitudes (we're on the approach to Atlanta Airport, so we see a lot of low-flying planes).

One time, I needed to know the best time of day for the sun to be at the best angle and direction to photograph a project. I typed "sun," and I got a ton of information about the sun, including a graph showing the sun's direction and altitude for each hour of the day at my location, which was very helpful.

I don't really know what the limitations are for Wolfram Alpha, and it won't replace the other search engines that I use, but it's really useful at times.

Note: Since this app relies on the Wolfram website, you have to be online to use the app.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love Wolfram|Alpha and you should too! April 20, 2013

Wolfram|Alpha is an amazing piece of software for anyone with curiosity, especially of the mathematical variety.

This app is the same as Wolfram|Alpha on the web (as far as I know), but it comes with a nice custom keyboard for inputting various mathematical symbols in.

Support the makers of this wonderful software - buy the app!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for math at home April 29, 2013

I wish I could use this at college instead of a $250 TI calculator. The app understands a wealth of mathematical concepts. It's easy to enter any problem and it includes a custom keyboard of math symbols. I'm currently learning calculus at home and this app is a great help.

This is basically a super computer. You just type in any topic and tons of information comes up. You get current events for cities and much more. I would recommend this app to anyone that is taking pre-algebra or higher as a calculator and just as a computer or google replacement to anyone. After downloading the app, I realize I would have paid maybe $5 or $10 for this!
