The third novel from Craig Thomas, and a slight depature from his previous book, Firefox, that made him a best-seller. Gone from here is the techno stuff we saw in the latter half of Firefox, but Thomas more than makes up for it with an expertly crafted spy story.

Opening the book in 1944, British agent Richard Gardiner is betrayed by an unknown sorce and captured by the Nazi's on a mission in France. After making an escape he vows revenge against his unknown betrayer. Years later, in 1963, Gardiner is vacationing in France with his family. Through a chance encounter with someone from his past, Gardiner takes up his plan for vengance and will not stop until he's finished, becoming a killing machine in the process.

Kenneth Aubrey, Thomas' most long-running charcter, makes appearances in both the beginning in 1944 and later in 1963. Aubrey had sent Gardiner on the mission that got him captured during the war and knows what damage an out-of-control Gardiner can cause when seeking revenge. Aubrey sends out Hilary Latymer, who appeared in Craig's first novel Rat Trap, to stop Gardiner from wreaking havoc.

By far the most low-tech of Craig's books, but it's all the better for it since it's also one of my favorites. Gardiner's son, Timothy, is cast in one of Craig's later books, All the Grey Cats, and will have to deal with the animal instincs he inherits from his father.
