5.0 out of 5 stars Fun romp...plain and simple, June 24, 2007
By
This review is from: Wolverine & Black Cat (Wolverine & the Black Cat) (Hardcover)
This book is much like a popcorn flick, you know that there isn't going to be anything deep involved, it will have some gaps (what short mini series doesn't take liberties?) and will be a fluff kind of story. That's all it does and does it well. Unlike others have said, the dialog does work. It is witty and plays to the characters themselves. I don't think the creators were trying to break new ground, rather show a slightly different side of the characters in a fun, humorous way.

Linser's art was the pen and ink variety and wasn't using the painted technique he is so often is displaying. While that was a slight disappointment, he delivered his usual style.

So purchase this if you want an entertaining romp of a story. These two characters are very similar when you break it down and I give the creators of this book credit for finding those similarities and poking fun at them in an entertaining way!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Dangerous Game, November 12, 2011
By
S. H. Wells (Tulsa, OK United States) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Wolverine & Black Cat (Wolverine & the Black Cat) (Hardcover)
Collecting: Claws (mini series) 1-3
Plus bonus art gallery

Synopsis:
Multi-millionaire hunters pay who they believe to be Kraven to capture Wolverine and Black Cat so they can be released and hunted on a private island hunting reserve. The diabolically crazy Arcade masterminds this plot. And as you might expect Wolverine and Black Cat prove to be tough prey.

Pros & Cons:
The Claws miniseries collected here is funny, sexy, and violent. From the opening scenes with Spiderman to dinner scene at the end, writer Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Joe Linsner really give Black Cat new life. She had always been a minor character, but with her Julie Newmar Catwoman inspired outfit and industrial strength claws she becomes a character I look forward to seeing again. The sexual tension between Wolverine and Black Cat leads to some great dialogue (deftly contrasted with spidey's one liners in the opening pages). I hope these two see more of eachother. Furthermore, the bonus art gallery offers some fantastic insight into the give and take that happens when creating a comic. Linsner's commentary throughout the gallery is also great.

The only downside to this miniseries is that it's pretty disconnected from any events in the Wolverine / x-men universe. It definitely feels like a short story. However I have to say I found it refreshing not to have to 20 issues of required reading in order to know what's going on here.

Summary:
If you're looking for a fun, light hearted romp in a steamy wet jungle with a good looking Black Cat and shirtless Wolverine, this is a great book. If you're looking for a more "serious" collection, this collection's humor may be off-putting.

1.0 out of 5 stars Yawn! zzz... zzz... zzz... Eh, what? zzz.... zzz.... zzz...., May 3, 2007
This review is from: Wolverine & Black Cat (Wolverine & the Black Cat) (Hardcover)
Two awesome characters! One disappointing book! If I was not such a die hard fan of Wolverine, and with a renewed love for Black Cat, I wouldn't have done wrong skipping this idiotic tale of boredom. The lack of entertainment runs rampant in this book. It far succeeds the enjoyment of this tale. The book robbed me of the effort it took for me to turn the pages. The storytelling lacked in so many areas; painfully boring, simple dialogue, undeveloped characters and most of all, such a simplistic story it could have been written back when the films Hard Target and Surviving the Game were released. The artwork, I would have assumed to be much better since it was supposedly painted. But, I would have to agree with the previous reviewer, it does boarderline between good and the "Family Circus" comic strips. Just skip this book, or buy it if you want everything Wolverine.
