3.0 out of 5 stars Wolvie hacks and slashes, Deadpool cracks jokes; the usual.., August 14, 2007

This review is from: Wolverine/Deadpool: Weapon X (Paperback)
This gathers 5 issues or so each of a storyline that ran though Wolverine the monthly comic series, and a Deadpool series backs it up.

I used to love Wolverine. While he remains an original, interesting character in his own right, I believe that stories like this, as well as the flood of "Origin" stories now filling the shelves, only serve to drag a great character down.

Here we have Wolvie being framed for the murder of a Senator connected to the Weapon X program (or maybe he did really do it--Logan can't really remember, see). This adventure finds him getting help from a certain Dr. Hank McCoy. Villians like Sabertooth of course appear along the way.

What's interesting is Wolvie's ties to the shadowy "director" of Weapon X, Malcom Concord. I won't reveal their ties here (if you read the comics you know this character and his history anyway), but Concord serves as an interesting foe for Wolvie, even as he delivers heavy exposition every time he appears.

The Deadpool side of this book is what saves this trade. Anyone who knows the 'merc with a mouth' will know exactly what to expect from this story.

I found myself quite bored with the Wolverine tale--even though there are enough twists, turns, and all-out action. Something about Frank Tieri's writing style just doesn't do it for me. Wolverine is basically invulnerable at this point. There's not much superlative here--The art is good to servicable. Why this is going for $50.00 through the marketplace is beyond me. It must be out of print.
