Quite a remarkable book,
By
This review is from: Wolverine: Inside the World of the Living Weapon (Hardcover)
One of the most incredible comic creations of the 1970's was the Wolverine.
Writer Len Wein, artists John Romita Sr and Herb Trimpe, along with X Men scribe Chris Claremont, wove a tapestry that transformed a dangerous, violent mutant into a moder day icon. His presence in Marvel titles is taken for granted, but the mythology behind his long life have not been known until now. DK and Marvel, in anticipation of the new X Men film, Wolverine, give readers an indepth look into the stories, both front and 'current', for Logan. We learn about his friends, his foes, his weakness', and along the way get to see a lot of cool art from Romita, Trimpe, Kaluta, Smith, Byrne, Miller, and Andrews. The book is highly detailed, yet as good as it is, some pages are too busy, particularly when a specific story is detailed. I can say that the pages are mostly good, and even the colorful layout washes out some of the text and illos. The book is red...and black. Page edges are black. Certainly eye catching at the least. Modern day readers who wonder who this Canadian born (1890's) hero was and is, will love this. Almost 200 pages of Wolverine bliss! [...] Tim Lasiuta

OUTSTANDING CHARACTER HISTORY,
This review is from: Wolverine: Inside the World of the Living Weapon (Hardcover)
DK's comic related books have definitely matured over the past couple of years. While a lot of their older books tended to be filled with a lot of fluff and not a lot of real content, their recent books have been quite good. Wolverine: Inside the World of the Living Weapon is one of the best, actually. It's 200 pages filled with information and insight on Marvel's most popular mutant. Sure it's still filled with great art from the comics but this is a book you can sink your teeth into.
Manning explores Wolverine's entire career both in terms of his fictional mythos but also his history in terms of the comics. We start with a look at the character himself as created by Len Wein, John Romita Sr., and Herb Trimpe. Throughout the book Manning notes "Key Issues" in Wolverine's comic history, the first being The Incredible Hulk #181 which featured the first Wolverine story. Manning provides a background into how the story came about relating how then Marvel Editor-in-Chief had visited Canada and had wanted to develop a Canadian superhero and handed the reins to Wein. There is a full story synopsis of this and all the key issues. Manning delves into Wolverine's unique powers and gives fans a list of the 10 things that Wolverine has survived thanks to his remarkable healing factor including surviving numerous explosions and gunshot wounds. There are also sections devoted to Wolverine's love interests and his various friends, allies, and enemies, and all his assorted group affiliations. And all this is in chapter one alone! Following chapters cover Wolverine's life, including his true origin and military history. Chapter 3 covers his eventual membership with the X-Men including profiles of the other team members and X-Men foes. The Key issue here, of course, is the landmark Giant-Sized X-Men #1. Chapter 4 focuses on Wolverine's solo career and includes a look at each of his solo comic titles. Chapter 5 looks at his further adventures and his involvement in many of Marvel's key storylines in the past 20 years such as "House of M" and "Civil War. The book concludes with Wolverine in the future as in the "Days of Future Past" tale. This is a remarkable book and the easily the best reference one could ask for, for such an important character. The art is fantastic, and the layout is perfect.

The ultimate guide to the ultimate weapon,

This review is from: Wolverine: Inside the World of the Living Weapon (Hardcover)
Here's the 200-page hardcover guide into one of the world's most popular mutants, Wolverine. This book really stands out visually. Not only is the cover red, the edges of the pages are also red.
I used to watch the classic X-men animation on TV, and even back then I was intrigued by Wolverine. His abilities are really cool, and his back stories are fascinating as well. The pages are filled to the brim with all sorts of information on Wolverine, like his origin, career, ability, lesser known facts, quotes, nemesis, love interest and all the different places he appears in his own comics and others. It's a engaging read into the legendary character. As with most DK books, this book is also loaded with beautiful art from the comics. There are all styles of Wolverine you can look at, him with his different costumes, outfits or without, as drawn by different top artists. This is the best compilation and writeup on Wolverine, certainly the ultimate guide to the ultimate weapon. (There are more pictures of the book on my blog. This review is from: Wolverine: Inside the World of the Living Weapon (Hardcover)
Wolverine: Inside the World of the Living Weapon is a DK book, that has published many other comprehensively fact-filled gorgeously imaginative comic book guidebooks on costume clad superhero,s that I have bought for my son, before in the past and this one is no different because it's one i've been waiting for a very long time,in which my mum finally bought it for me. This particular guidebook has always stood out above the rest in it's gory red bloody front cover which looks as though it has been dipped in blood, and unfortunely everything in the outside of this book is red including all the edges of the pages, which is very appropriate for DK,and well done to them and it most certainly shows as a fitting beginning for the canine himself Wolverine. And He most certainly has come a long way in 30 years and more so since his creation in 1974 as goverment operative agent superhero and ever since then has changed a lot in a tremendous amount of time from his original conception,as a bersek savage animal that has changed and enhanced and improved his character a great deal as a pleasent image which is not a feral bersek animal. And this time of course dk celebrates now with Wolverine's classical comic book roots, in comic book history with an incredible imaginary cast of a feral wild animal with classic story one liners hoop lahh! To this day now as a franchise Wolverine has been, a firm favorite of mine and after all is Marvels' most popularly enduring superhero mutant icon. And this book reveals, why he is marvels most popularly enduring icon that has lasted throughout a decade and beyond in which it explores and explains every facet and fascinating twist and turn of his career as canadain goverment operative agent working now as a recruited member of the x-men team which is fortunetly no longer shrouded in mystery,as a origin, until now which hasn't been a secret for decades, but was and still is revealed to the public as a, significant adventurer for a new group of persecuted mismatched mutants that he decided to join,as a recruit and personally struggles with it now as member of the team along with a his lost , allies and teams. And this is a perfect collation guide to an amazing wild peccuilar strange feral mutant in one book. And his story so far has been presented in dribs and drabs here and then everywhere and it's refreshing now to pick it up as one book and read the entire history of him in one collection.Which is very selective in i'ts timeline and is invaluable in understanding a complex mutant of Wolverines calibre. Plus, there also a i special emphasis on Wolverine's adventures beyond his usual mutant books, his roles in the Avengers and in mega stories like Civil War, House of M and Secret Invasion well presented and complete. Wolverine without doubt will always be and continue to be my most favourite comic book character because he exemplifies the conflict faced for a person in a situation of his modern but primitive wild feral self and it's now taken to the ultimate extreme. And He's now constantly faced with the conflict of been broken towards good and evil, and it's an internal challenge for him to control it as bestial struggle which define's who he is as a man of his status not quo as a primitive but feral stable wild mutant. And this ongoing temptation for him as a sin is whether or not to give it up as a animal and follow the path of nature for in which is the footsteps of Sabretooth and is true to be who is as a feral wild mutant. And this constant part of him is to yield and surrender to the call of the wild which is always countered by another part of him that's just as in compassionate in its quest to embrace the humanity, of the wild which is to live his life to the full as a man.And This is what has defined Wolverine for decades as a hero and has made him out to be one of the most intriguing and interesting characters in all of the X-men mythos. Well done DK me and my son would like to highly recommend this book to anyone for reading it as a packed filled reference book full of information in it's resource and knowledge in character. And It all goes without saying in the end that Hugh Jackman has portrayed Wolverine as no other actor would have done and did on the screen and has definitely guaranteed to being the perfect incarnation of Wolvey himself, and has opened up his mysterious shrouded past so that way we could experience it as a feeling and pain of being who he is as a feral wild canadain costume clad superhero wolverine!
