5.0 out of 5 stars A Blood-Spattered Lovesong, June 18, 2008
This review is from: Wolves (MP3 Download)
This is a deceptively complex Modern-FaerieTale Wolf in the wooly guise of a LaptopFolk-NewClassic Sheep. Think "Little Red Riding Hood" for grown-ups, and you're halfway there. This is a stealthy little lovesong, creeping through the dark with murder in its heart. The masterful narrative shines pale moonlight on a moss-damp underbelly of lust and longing, exposing a disturbing desire and an aching adoration. In the words of co-writer Sam Genders, "It's about blokes yearning for girls who seem to have magical powers and exist on a higher plain than them. So they get drunk and hunt in packs and some of them treat the girls like prey and some of them are just trying to find the courage to say hello." From a simple patter of drums and drone of cello develops a rich lace of melody, interwoven with the vocalists' delicate, star-crossed confection of harmonies. Heartbreakingly beautiful.
