5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for women, young or old. January 30, 2007
Format:Paperback
I am inclined to disagree with the reviewer who felt the book read like a "1950's Home Ec. Book." I'm in my late 20's, and while the book is not written with the modern feminist movement in mind, it is still a great book with wonderful ideas. Yes, women were created to be a "help-mate" for men, specifically, to our husbands. Women were/are instructed by the Apostle Paul to respect and to submt ourselves to our husbands, which is what Mrs. George emphasizes.

As for being "physically available" for our husbands, not only is it Biblical - but in the book, Mrs. George is referring to women who withhold sex from their husbands as "punishment" for some transgression.

As for the comment that the author commends a woman for dropping out of Bible study to spend time with her husband, it was taken out of context. In the book, a friend of the author had to choose between her Wednesday "morning out/ladies brunch/Bible study" and spending the day with her husband, whose day off fell on Wednesday.

I commend the author for standing up for the traditional marriage relationship. No, everything she says won't work for every couple, but the main idea is to make your husband your #2 priority (after God - of course) I believe that author makes a very good argument for the relationship between a husband and wife. So often in marriages the couple grows apart and children, careers, and selfish behavior take over. I think this book is great reading, as are all of Mrs. George's books.

By G.G.
Format:Paperback
This book is a wonderful resource for putting things in perspective in an increasingly busy world. George has a fabulous system for organizing your daily to-do list: start with ordering your priorities and then schedule them in every day. First is time with God, second is your spouse, third is your children, fourth is your home, fifth is your own personal growth, sixth is your ministries, and seventh is anything else that doesn't fall into those categories (errands, movies, etc.)

Now, I tweaked the system a bit to personalize it for my life. I don't have children, and I schedule TV time in with my husband almost daily because it's something we enjoy. And the realization that the time I spend talking to and uplifting my friends, family members, and church members is actually a ministry-it's something important to me and God-made me realize I am spending quality time on Earth doing a quality job for Heaven. Plus, it's given me the push to make sure I contact people more regularly because it's worth the time.

I've read the other reviews and realize some people think the book is archaic for stating that women are on assignment from God to help their husbands, but according to the Bible we are: we are here to help everyone we know do their best to get to heaven and do the most to further His kingdom. I don't know of a better way than to spend our time serving anyone we can, most especially our husbands.

I have read this book several times now, making notes and lists of tips to take for my own life to improve my servitude. I have felt the change. As a twenty-something, I have given this book to friends from 29 to 64 to help them make the most of organizing their own time to work for God in all facets of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Changed My Life June 18, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I was led to this book at the store during a time of confusion and exasperation with my relationship with my husband and life in general. A Woman After God's Own Heart changed my life because it put the focus of my efforts and energy in a different place. Suddenly I wasn't living for myself, or insisting on equality in my marriage at all times. I surrendered my resentment, surrendered my control to God. This book put everything in perspective and since I read it in 1998, I have been a very different wife, mother, neighbor and woman. Thank you and God Bless you ............

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Reading For Every Christian Woman September 13, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book had a great impact on my life, especially as a wife and mother. Many times, the things she advocated made me resentful, because they demand that I die to my own will, and treat people the way GOD wants me to treat them, whether they deserve it or not! I loved her way of prioritizing things, reminding us that our husbands and children come before anyone else, and that our families should never doubt how important they are to us. Walking in God's path isn't easy, and it is a relief to hear an author encourage us to take the hard way, instead of the easy way!

3.0 out of 5 stars Superwoman? May 20, 2003
Format:Paperback
This author is a wonderful Christian lady full of wonderful Christian values. She states things that are obvious that we should do and those things that we didn't realize we should do.

One part of the book really hit home with my personal life style, that I need to improve on. However, the largest impression that this book has given ME (maybe not to other readers) is everything that I DON'T do right. She has great concepts, but to me it is taken a little to the extreme. I think -"How would anyone have enough time to do ALL the things she mentions in her book?" For instance, we're suppose to make EVERY meal a special occasion with flowers, different table cloths, special plates, games, etc. That sounds great for maybe one day a week or especially for birthdays, but I can't see having time to do that plus take care of my husband, two-year old son, the house, the bills, the errands, the cooking, my prayer time, my reading time, my exercise time. Whew!

I had to take serveral breaks while reading this book, because of the negative feelings I received from it. You don't really get a sense from the author that she struggles with completing all things things. She has many references to things other people do and how she would quickly try to do those things in her family. I feel like I'm trying to keep up with the Jones'.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that we should follow God's Word. But should we live trying to be a perfect superwoman? I'm going to use the concepts of this book to improve my role as wife and mother, but in ways that usually come naturally pleasant for me. I think we should use our own likes and gifts to help build our family. Instead of getting joke books from the library every week, I might pick a fun activity that we like to do together, etc....

I don't discourage anyone from reading this book, it is a good book. I just recommend that you don't overwhelm yourself and think you're not a good person. Read more ›
