5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
I purchased this book while traveling alone in Portland (not truly alone since I was visiting friends). I loved every single one of the essays. Each one was well-written, interesting, and inspiring. I thought certain essays would not interest me since the area of the world visited I thought didn't interest me -- and I was completely wrong. After reading this book, I'm...

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I normally thoroughly enjoy reading travelogues. I was looking forward to this book for a week before I found time to read it. I didn't feel it was worth my time. I was looking for more information about and feel about the places, and less self-exploration of the authors. Not bad, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

This was my first attempt at reading anything by and about women travelers. Some of the writings were very interesting while others seemed a little pointless. I did enjoy the different viewpoints from women of various countries and ethnic backgrounds. Having traveled on my own (and about to embark again), I was glad to delve into the experiences of other women. Most of the accounts are of foreign travel, but there was one (maybe more) about domestic experiences. The stories reminded me of my own travels and even inspired me to begin an essay about part of my experience in another country.

I thought certain essays would not interest me since the area of the world visited I thought didn't interest me -- and I was completely wrong. After reading this book, I'm game for anything -- and I'd rather do it as a solo traveller. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in embarking on an adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, September 23, 2008
This review is from: A Woman Alone: Travel Tales from Around the Globe (Paperback)
This book was just as it states, travel tales. Most of the tales involved the people and places the women experienced. The book didn't claim to be a travel guide or a compilation of funny tales, but failed. It was a story of what can happen to the average traveler if she opens her heart to experiences. The stories exposed me to sites off the beaten path, and places ignored on the beaten path.

I loved the "I'm going to try it just because it's there." attitude most of the women had. Then once in the process of their adventures self-doubts came into play, but they continued on anyway. I also liked the fact that many discussed that traveling alone isn't always a natural act. Many times the women were self-conscious or aware of their unique solo travel arrangements.

It was fun to read a story or two before drifting off to sleep with the wonders of different cultures and places in my thoughts.

Fantastic book. My favorite story in the collection was Peabody's tremendous tale of her hike along a 1,000-mile Buddhist pilgrimage to 88 temples around the island of Shikoku in Japan. Truly the work of a lapidary stylist and soulful sister.

I first read this book a few years ago and LOVED it. This book really reignited my travel bug. The essays are engaging and not too long. I have 4 kids and reading anything of length is generally out of the question. This was great since I could read a full essay while in carpool line, etc. I'm inspired to try a solo trip abroad for the adventure and thrill of being on my own. I gave this book to my mom who also enjoyed it.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's just the beginning..., October 14, 2005
This review is from: A Woman Alone: Travel Tales from Around the Globe (Paperback)
I found the essays to be a wonderful combination of wit and introspection while discovering one's own culture and place in the world, exactly what solo travel is all about. Several essays inspired me to seek out the novels from which they were extracted or to explore other writings by the authors. Robyn Davidson's excerpt on her trek through Australia is one such example. Excellent collection!
