I liked this book. It was a nice relaxing read. The storyline was good and I'm pleased to say that I didn't figure out the big secret in the book until it was revealed. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not as Good as It Could've Been

Ok, seriously, who wouldn't want to read a book about a female bounty hunter? What a unique idea for story, and definitely a profession that would have been frowned upon in the late 1800's. This was my first experience reading one of DiAnn Mills's books, and I have mixed feelings about it.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars..., October 4, 2010

I liked this book. It was a nice relaxing read. The storyline was good and I'm pleased to say that I didn't figure out the big secret in the book until it was revealed. This book was just pretty much just what you'd expect for a Christian Romance. No swearing, some religious talk, not a lot of romance and zero passion.

Although I enjoyed the story and especially Hawk, I found there to be no excitement. The story was a bit slow and the couple intense parts seemed to be over before I could blink. If a nice slow, Christian Romance is what you enjoy then I'm sure you'll love this book but, if you like all types of romance books then you may want to look elsewhere since you won't find much romance or excitement here.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as Good as It Could've Been, May 15, 2010
This review is from: A Woman Called Sage: A Novel (Paperback)
**This review contains spoilers.**

Ok, seriously, who wouldn't want to read a book about a female bounty hunter? What a unique idea for story, and definitely a profession that would have been frowned upon in the late 1800's. This was my first experience reading one of DiAnn Mills's books, and I have mixed feelings about it.

The beginning....fabulous! I was hooked from the very first page because that's where the action starts. In a matter of minutes, Sage loses her husband and her unborn child thanks to a band of outlaws that are convinced that Sage's husband has something that belongs to them. Unfortunately for the outlaws, they didn't successfully send Sage to an early death, and now, she's out for revenge. She then spends a few years with her Ute ancestors, and after her time there, she becomes a bounty hunter determined to find the men responsible for the deaths of her husband and son.

Sage manages to catch up with Aiden McCaw, one of the outlaws, and brings him into the nearest town to turn him over to the marshall, Parker Timmons, and collect the bounty money. Aiden doesn't last long in jail thanks to his brothers riding into town to bust him out. They beat Parker to a pulp, and leave him unconscious in the jail. His brothers also manage to kidnap two of Parker's nephews. When Sage discovers all of this, she and Parker ride their horses into the mountains to rescue the boys.

For a book to be named after a main character, Sage's role in the story didn't seem to be a very large one after the first third of the book. True, her rescue of Parkers' nephews was very brave, but after that, she spends almost the rest of the story as an invalid recovering from a gunshot wound. My initial desire to read the book was based mostly on the title and the front cover, and after seeing Sage's character basically take a backseat for almost the rest of the story, I have to admit that I was a little disappointed.

Remember the injuries that Parker got at the jail break? Well, when he and Sage return to town after rescuing the boys, it's like they disappear. They're not mentioned again until somewhere at the end of the book, and even there, it's in retrospect. I don't know if the author was trying to focus on what awaited them when they got back to town or what, but this part of the story just did not seem complete.

In short, the beginning was great, the middle was less than great, and the end seemed a little too tidy. I think if Sage had not spent the majority of the book confined to a bed, and if the action from the beginning had continued all the way through, this would've been a 5-star book for me. As is, I'd give it 3 stars. Hopefully, someone else will enjoy it in its entirety.

5.0 out of 5 stars A definite cut above most historical romances, May 4, 2010
This review is from: A Woman Called Sage: A Novel (Paperback)
I generally don't read historical romances, but I'd really enjoyed DiAnn Mills' Call of Duty Series, so when I received a review copy of A WOMAN CALLED SAGE, I plunged into it. Glad I did! Mills hooked me from the very beginning, and didn't let go until the last page.

The adventure starts early in the first chapter and doesn't let up. Her heroine, a half-Ute woman named Sage, is a bounty hunter who's out to capture and bring to justice the men who killed her husband and unborn child. Along the way, she has to make some difficult personal decisions. There's romance, intrigue, and danger throughout the book.

Mills' characters are, as always, well-drawn, and she's done a great job of incorporating the setting of frontier Colorado into the story. Plotting and pacing are good, and the ending is satisfying.

This book should appeal to a wide audience

5.0 out of 5 stars Real life people with real life issues!, June 8, 2010
This review is from: A Woman Called Sage: A Novel (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I loved this book from the opening page. But my review will take a bit of a different tact than the other reviews so far listed.

This book has a major theme about how anger, hatred and revenge are handled by different people yet they all have the same real life problem, it leads to bitterness. I loved the way the author tied this theme into the book, showed us how the Marshall, the bounty hunter and even the outlaw had to deal with the concept of revenge.

The Marshall, Parker Timmons, handles the issue from a religious background, lots of prayer, lots of asking God what's up. Sage, the bounty hunter, faces the issue from her Native American Indian background that includes being half caucasian. She also attended church with her family growing up, but the book shows how she is angry at God and questions, "If God is so loving how could He allow bad things to happen to good people!" That is a question that it seems to me all people ask at some point in their life. We all question God.

I enjoyed the book because it brought out these very human feelings, asked the right questions about God and then did a good job of answering those questions. All of that wrapped up in a Historical Romance Novel. WOW, I wouldn't have believed it could be done, but it was.

If you are a church goer and have ever wondered about how to handle the real hard issues life throws at you there is an underlying lesson waiting for you in this gripping novel.

Regarding the novel part. I agree with everyone else that has reviewed it. It grabs you from the first moment and holds your attention through the entire book. I finished it in a day and a half. I loved it. I think you will too. I personally plan to use this as part of our book club discussion group, I'm sure they will love it.

Enjoy!

1.0 out of 5 stars Terribly written, January 13, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Woman Called Sage: A Novel (Paperback)
The bare bones of this book are decent: interesting plot, some unique characters. But the writing is absolutely abominable. This is trite, cliched writing at its worst. Here's an example:

'"Hard to have an appetite for the food she'd smelled all afternoon when she felt like she was drowning in a river of emotions, and the source of those feelings sat within arm's reach...Right now all she could do was tread water and hope she didn't get caught up in the whirlpool of his eyes."

I will admit that I thought I was grabbing a historical fiction novel, not a Christian romance, so I went into this book with mistaken expectations. But even if someone told me they enjoyed Christian romances, I would not recommend this book because I thought the writing was so poor. But by the same token, this book gets fantastic reviews by nearly everyone else. Perhaps this book is well-written by the standards of this genre.

So take my review as the opinion of someone who hasn't read anything else in this genre to compare it to. However, I am an avid reader who reads 1-2 books per week across many genres of fiction, and this was simply terrible compared to anything else I've read in any genre. I almost didn't finish read it at all, and I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've done that.

A women called Sage is a great read about a women that lost her husband and unborn baby because of some outlaws, after she recovers she learns how to be a bounty hunter and goes after them, this is an exciting and interesting read, she has a Hawk that is her loyal friend and goes with her everywhere that she nursed when it was young and hurt, it isn't a series and it was a free ebook download so you can't go wrong!, this is my first book from this authur that I have read and I plan to read some more of her work. I would recommend you download it before it isn't free anymore but if it isn't free it is still worth buying in my opion!

i liked it - I'm just an avid reader and devour about anything in this genre and wasn't disappointed. I always appreciate everyone else's feedback and so I thought I would give it my own 4 stars to pump up the ratings, and let others know that it's a good story. Just read the summary - and if it sounds up your alley, it probably won't disappoint.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too Much Killing for Genre, January 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Woman Called Sage: A Novel (Paperback)
This book is decent, but it takes too long to get to the point. I think if it had gone on any longer, it would have gotten a 2 star. Additionally, for this to be in the Christian genre there is too much killing. Even if it wasn't in this genre, the killing is pointless and totally absurd, without adding to the story.

Also, there are so many holes in the plot; it just doesn't make sense at some level.

I do like Sage and the strength and character that she portrays.

I really loved this book. It was an easy read that kept me interested throughout the entire book. I never figured out the "Big" secret about Sage's dead husband or his connection to the outlaw gang. It truly was a great book that kept me guessing until the end!
