Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In this latest entry in Hyperion's excellent series for women by women, Ferber (psychiatry, Columbia Univ.) and medical writer Levert show how depression affects men and women differently. They cover a variety of types of depression and explain the symptoms of each. After detailing women's unique symptoms, risks, and biology, they devote considerable discussion to choices of treatment, with risks, benefits, and examples described. Each chapter ends with summary questions and answers. An appendix lists national organizations that focus on depressive illnesses, and suggestions for further reading are included. This little book is amazingly comprehensive for its size and covers depression in plain language without talking down to readers. An excellent overview for high school and public library collections.?Catherine T. Charvat, John Marshall Lib., Alexandria, Va.

This review is from: A Woman Doctor's Guide to Depression: Essential Facts and Up-To-The-Minute Information on Diagnosis, Treatment, and Recovery (Books for Women By Women) (Paperback)
Depression is a gender-specific illness, striking twice as many women than men. This book defines clinical depression, cites different types of depression, and gives a complete listing of both the pharmaceutical and psychological therapies currently available to help those with this debilitating disease. I especially appreciated the real-life examples from various women who were undergoing treatment as well as a very easy to read breakdown of the different antidepressant drugs. This book demystifies depression and brings to focus the importance of seeking help.
