Shirley Brown: Southern Soul Queen Scores Again,
By
This review is from: Woman Enough (Audio CD)
It's been 21 years since singer Shirley Brown delivered her timeless classic "Woman To Woman," a spine-tingling tune about betrayal, discovery, adultery and sweet revenge.
Brown, a native of West Memphis, Ark., was immediately compared to soul queen Aretha Franklin, because she too possed a sultry and gospel-rooted singing style that was perfect for the deep and funky soul music she loved to sing. "Woman Enough," Brown's latest for Malaco Records reveals her vocal gifts undimished by time, as the singer showcases her skill on a variety of material that ranges from the sly and suggestive innuendo of "Poon Tang Man," a major hit in southern markets to the comical "I've Got to Sleep With One Eye Open," another adult-oriented tune in which Brown sings about an over zealous lover, who should probably have his bottle of Viagra taken away. The only drawback to this fine album of contemporary southern soul is that Brown is backed by instrumentation that sounds like synthesizers programmed to emulate horns and strings. A singer of Brown's skill and charm definitely deserves better.

This is old school soul and r&b. Shirley Brown with her Arethaesque voice take us through some great southern soul. Poon tang man leads off with a woman in need of a quick fix. Stuck on stupid, a great reality check song if there ever was one. The songs are soulful, funky and urban. Some have a wry sense of humor, others will break your heart. Not only is this woman a great singer, but a wonderful songwriter. The set closes with a heartfelt tribute to her deceased mother. This woman needs more exposure. She is a national treasure, discover her now.
